Showing Its Age

It seems like everything is kind of falling apart lately. Maybe not completely falling apart, but definitely showing signs of age. That's the sort of thing that happens as time passes I guess. I mentioned earlier in the week that my parents in law are currently in the process of moving to a new house. With just the two of them, a four bedroom multi-level monstrosity just isn't as necessary as it used to be.

Although they hired a moving company to handle most of the stuff, there is still all the packing and other little things that need to be taken care of. We spent a good deal of our weekend at both the new house and the old house getting things packed up or set up. They still have a long way to go.

It's good they have us, because I don't know how they would be able to do it on their own (they likely wouldn't). However, the extra work has taken a toll on us as well. We aren't getting younger, that's for sure. I've been dealing with aches and pains and just all around weariness all week.

The good news is, once they get settled, it's going to be really nice for them. Believe it or not, that house is smaller than their old one. Actually, it's a two unit condo, so the photo above is a bit deceptive as that is actually two residences. Trust me, it threw me for a bit at first as well.

I had my annual physical the other day. After a bit of blood work that the doctor does each year, it turns out my triglycerides and vldl cholesterol are a bit elevated. It doesn't surprise me at all, I have felt my body has been a bit out of whack lately. I'm actually surprised that my glucose seemed to be quite good, I expected that to be higher.

Despite what you probably think from reading my blog, I actually eat pretty healthy most of the time. The rare occasions that we go out to eat are what I share here. It's funny, because despite my blood work numbers, I'd say I am healthier now than I ever have been in my life. I exercise regularly each week and I eat far less red meat and far more vegetables than I ever used to.

I think my biggest issue is probably snacking on sweet treats and portion control. It looks like I will need to work on that between now and my next physical.

Meanwhile, I've been noticing some rust on my truck which kind of ticks me off, but it is ten years old, so I guess that is kind of expected. What wasn't expected though was the fact that one of my running boards completely broke loose from two of the connection points this past weekend. I was getting in the truck from moving some stuff as previously mentioned, when I stepped on the running board and it moved under my feet.

I gingerly drove the truck home, and after crawling under it, I realized that the salt from the winter roads had totally corroded away the aluminum on the underside of the running board.

Since I prefer functionality over aesthetics, I just drilled a couple of holes all the way through the mounting bracket and the running board and ran a couple of galvanized bolts through it with washers and nuts on each side. I'm going to have to keep an eye on those nuts as I expect they will vibrate loose over time, but for now it is a solid fix.

It's funny, although I measured how long of a bolt I needed, I always seem to buy too long of bolts and they end up sticking way out like these ones here. I guess that's better than it being too short, but still, it seems like I can never get things exactly right.

I might crawl under there with a cutting wheel at some point and make them a more manageable length. The good news is, if I ever have to make the same fix on the other side, I know now that I can probably go with 2.5 or 2 inches on the bolts instead of 3 inches.

I mention all of this because it just sheds more light on the fact that my truck is getting old and I know eventually I am probably going to have to replace it.

Finally, I ran over to my parents last night and I brought our travel trailer home for the camping season. It's just about a month way now. That means I have a full month to discover all the things that need to be fixed on the trailer before we can use it. Just another thing around the bozz household that is showing its age.

It's inevitable right?

My blood work came back flawless as usual, but I am getting some signs of aging: I feel like I need to clear my throat all the time, but a visit to ENT didn't reveal anything. And another sign of aging is that I started snoring at night according to my wife...

Snoring isn't as big of a deal for me anymore now that I have my CPAP machine.

Nice share.

Have you ever used spring washer.

Thank you! Like a lock washer?

Yes, exactly. It might be helpful in preventing the fix from losing the nuts for a longer period. Plus double nuts which also makes a lock.

That looks like a nice place your parents are moving into! I'm going through something similar now—our son is moving back in with us until he can find a house. I've been lugging storage bins and furniture down three flights of his apartment stairs and into our house for the past few days. I'm a little afraid to see my numbers during this year's physical. We've been eating more grass-fed red meat than we ever have now. My wife just had her bloodwork done, although her triglycerides are way down (they were historically high in the past) her total cholesterol is up slightly. I expect it'll be the same for me. I'm hearing a lot about how the cholesterol thresholds set by the Heart Association are way too low to encourage more statin prescriptions but a lot of those people saying this are following the carnivore diet and they can be biased. Older vehicles can be a pain sometimes but they're the best. After a while they become like an old friend. I once kept a Saturn SL2 for about twelve years and although it was very basic I loved that car.

Thanks, it's actually my wife's parents. She has an aunt that lives in the same community. It's a lot of people their age, so I hope they will make some good connections. It's just kind of crazy how much stuff you accumulate over the years. My wife and I are pretty minimal when it comes to "stuff", but it would still be a bit of a chore to move it all. My domain in the garage is probably the worst offender.

I kind of knew this was coming with the blood work. My clothes have been getting tighter, so I knew I was going to have to have a come to Jesus moment with myself at some point. Hopefully with my increased activity in the summer and some better portion control I can get things sorted out.

I really love my truck, but I know one day I am going to have to replace it. Later rather than sooner I hope!

Oh, I must have misread that! So this must be in the Dublin area? It is crazy how much we accumulate. We did a massive purge after we sold our home in 2015 to downsize into a smaller space but now have acquired even more stuff than we had before. It's going to be a nightmare the next time we have to move but I'll try not to think about that for a while. : )

Just plain walking helps tremendously. I've been watching the seed oils, sugar, and refined carbs lately and feel so much better cutting that stuff out. My brain is much more clear too.

Our vehicles become almost like family members after a while. I hope your truck lasts for a long time to come. I plan on this Model Y I recently bought being my last vehicle. I think autonomous taxis will become so cheap and prevalent in the next few years buying another vehicle will just won't make sense anymore.
