Gratitude: A Simple Act That Means So Much

Gratitude is essential, and we all should learn how to show it. Many people have a sense of entitlement that clouds their mind to be grateful for what they've or are being given. Instead, they see no reason to be appreciative of what they have or what they're being given; rather, they fix their gaze on the next thing they desire. This isn't the way to go, and that's why we must inculcate the habit of showing gratitude for everything, no matter how little or worthless it might seem. An adage in my family says, "When you show gratitude for the gift of yesterday, it'll pave the way for you to get more today or in the near future."

It's not like the adage is only encouraging showing gratitude so you can get more, but just helping us to understand the importance of gratitude. As an individual, if I were to give two people the same gift and only get to see just one of them appreciate the gift. I'll feel satisfied and proud of myself, and that'll want to push me to do more for that person because I know they know the worth and sacrifices behind what I've given and not just think it's their right to get it in the first place.

My parents and grandparents who raised me make it a point of duty to teach me about the importance of gratitude; in fact, even if all I get is a compliment about my dress or look, they'll make sure I appreciate the person for having such a nice thing to say about me. The same is the case when it comes to gifts, and these have through the years become a part of me now that I've grown. I remember how my neighbor helped me with some electrical fixings of cables and panels on my house, and at the end of the day when I wanted to pay him, he declined. To show gratitude, I continually thanked him for the next few days until he had to tell me to stop, that it's not a big deal. Well, to me it's a big deal because I know how much an outsider who's also a professional like him would have charged me.

On a final note, I'd like to encourage us to learn to show gratitude to everyone who did one thing or another for us regardless of how little it is. Even if it's the person's duty or responsibility to do it, still say thank you. Take for instance when I was still an undergraduate and my dad sent me my school fees. I'd call him on the phone and thank him and then go on to pray for him. Yes, I know it's his responsibility, but I still need to be grateful he did it. There are fathers who aren't doing their responsibilities to their children, and there's nothing the child can do about it, so me having a responsible parent is worth being grateful for. Show gratitude today and make it a part of your habits.
