Yet another day of the year with an assigned designation, today is International Museum Day. I honestly had never heard of it until today, but why not? Museums are great places and really don't get utilized nearly as much as they should be. There are exceptions to that rule of course, like the Louvre in Paris, that is always overcrowded, but any smaller museums often don't get very heavy foot traffic.
I remember growing up my favorite museums were always the natural history variety, mainly because they were filled with dinosaur bones. I would have considered paleontology as a career but my understanding is that it really didn't pay all that well! So my career path went elsewhere in the world of science...
This topic got me thinking about a silver piece I have been searching for for years at a good price. This is a hand poured silver masterpiece created by Monarch Metals in pure silver and weighing in at three Troy ounces. Not only is it the skull of a T Rex it comes inside it's very own fossil crate. isn't that dope?

These things are very hard to find, the only one I found for sale was on eBay for $350... Not in the budget this week for sure! Maybe some day the stars will align and I'll finally get one, but for now, I'm not holding my breath! lol
Now onto an actual skeleton of a T Rex. I have seen a few before in person over the years, none of course are complete when they are found. Many of these have resin bones filling in the spots where bones are missing. Sadly, after hundreds of millions of years the fossils are rarely in perfect condition. It really is amazing just how big these lizards were, and they did a great job creating them in the Jurassic Park movies.

And an artist's life life rendition, not something you want to run into in the woods!

Now onto some art museums, as an adult I've always loved art museums!

Ponce Art Museum in Ponce, Puerto Rico is one of my favorite art museums in the world. There are several reasons it, first it's not so big that it takes forever to see everything, and second it has some great masterpieces. It's definitely one of the best if not the best located in the Caribbean. I lived close by once upon a time and had a chance to visit fairly frequently, but this was back in the 90's before the smart phone and easy access picture taking. On my last trip back there I was unable to visit as the museum had been damaged by earthquakes and was being repaired, I had hoped to finally get some great pictures. Oh well...

If you are ever in Puerto Rico this is a great stop on the south side of the island. It's a gorgeous structure (although dated as it was build in the 1960's).

The most famous painting they own is known as "Flaming June" by Sir Frederic Leighton and painted in 1895. For a long time this painting was pretty much ignored and sat on top mantle for years before being rediscovered in the early 1960's. At one point composer Andrew Lloyd Weber wanted to buy it for fifty pounds sterling but couldn't come up with the money. Eventually it was purchased by Luis A. Ferré for around $1,000, specifically for the museum which he had recently created.

Ironically, the painting is now deemed to be worth millions of dollars. Talk about a good buy! In life everything comes down to timing, sometimes it's right and you get lucky. Other times it just doesn't work out... A lesson I have learned well over the years.
At any rate, if you are in Puerto Rico I recommend the museum highly. Just don't forget to enjoy the beautiful beaches and diving as well. It really is a beautiful location!

Just looking at all these fun skeletons and works of art today has gotten me excited about actually getting out to a museum one of these days soon. It's such a shame that admission fees are so high anymore, especially here in southern California. But everything is expensive here now... The price of living in year round nice weather I suppose!
