Exploring The Thengal Kachari Heritage Museum

Hello there! My dear City fam, I would like to take you to a virtual tour to a cultural heritage museum belonging to an indigenous tribe, Kachari of Assam. I have recently visited this place with my friends and I was awestruck by the beautiful eco-friendly environment in and around the museum. I could not be able to take pictures within the premises of the museum as photography was strictly prohibited there. But, I could definitely share my experience with you all.

Named after the Thengal clan of the Kachari dynasty, this museum was established in 2020 with the aim of preserving and showcasing the cultural legacy of Assam. The museum itself is a testament to the architectural marvels of bygone eras. This museum stands as a beacon of the region's rich heritage, offering a glimpse into its glorious past and cultural diversity. The museum is situated few kilometers away from the district Jorhat, close to Titabor town which is also famous for its tea research centre, Tocklai. The place is also in a distant distance from the famous Kaziranga National Park of Assam, famous for it's one horned rhinoceros.

Just as we entered the hall, we witnessed a beautiful bamboo artifact depicting a battle between buffalo. Some of the wall pillars are decorated with face masks of Rakshas(devil). Bamboo sheets are used to cover some walls giving a magnificent touch. As we ascended to the first floor, we noticed a mural depicting the traditional outfits of several Kachari communities, Boro, Thengal and Deori. A wonderfully crafted bamboo craft that was installed on the ceiling could be seen on the right side of the mural.

On the first floor, two bamboo sculptures representing the Sattriya Nrittya (a form of folk dance) and a picture of Srimanta Sankaradeva (a saint, scholar) are on display on the left wall to the entry gate. They looked absolutely amazing. Sankaradeva was a saint who provided a thread of unity to Assam straddling tow of the then major kingdoms, the Ahom and the Koch. The people of Assam has a great respect for him for what he has done for the land.

We may have a peek of everything there is to know about the Kachari tribe at the museum. The space is divided into multiple sections showcasing hunting gear, farming supplies, apparel, musical instruments, and some pictures of Assamese landscapes and way of life. The museum draws an old aged, lifestyle of the people of Assam. The Hasi Pator Puthi (Assamese manuscript) is also kept at the museum. The realistically displayed model of the Kachari people's traditional home was the most fascinating feature of the exhibit.

A few salonis and dolas (Assamese traditional tool made of bamboo strips used to separate husk from rice and other grains) were taped to the wall on the ground floor. A little park for kids, some wall graffiti and a gorgeously adorned section of the building wall with pictures can all be found behind the building. In addition, 7D and video games are available. I could not visit the 7D experience where one could select whether they like to experience horror, apolcalyptic or many other events to choose from. The next time, I plan my visit, I will surely experience the horror one.

All in all, the unforeseen visit proved to be a positive experience that broadened our understanding. By educating people about the Thengal Kachari tribe, which is renowned for maintaining the region's culture and legacy, this museum will support growth, particularly in the travel and tourism industry of Assam. The museum will serve as a lighthouse for both the state of Assam and the subdivision of Titabor. You will definitely get hungry after spending hours exploring the museum and taking in its splendor and so we were. The cafeteria is directly in front of the museum, so have a seat and enjoy your meal in an open space viewing the magnificent view outside the museum.

Although our journey through the Thengal Kachari Museum may have come to an end, the memories and insights gained along the way will surely linger on.

Yes indeed! The whole musuem is full of eco friendly material mostly. Whether inside or outside the musuem hall, It's full of environment friendly objects. Even in outside, the cafeteria also has chairs made of bamboo and behind the core building, there's a bamboo garden. So it's locally handmade. It boosts the tourism attraction of the place.

Thank you for visiting my blog. I appreciate it.
