A Painful Discovery

It’s 1 am already and I can’t bring myself to sleep, I have been tossing and turning for hours and the only thing on my mind is the disaster that occurred yesterday.

How do I delete yesterday from my memory and also from the world? How do I get past this terrible experience? How do I bring myself to love again after all these? This and many more troubled my mind as I lay in my bed, seeking answers that I could never find and finding solace in the confines of my bed.

My train of thought was interrupted by a call from my best friend. Shit! I didn’t put my phone on DND. I hurriedly ended the call but trust my best friend to call continuously.

Pheewww.. I took a sharp breath before picking up the call.

“Hello Ma’am it’s 1 am and every responsible human knows it’s wrong to call people by this time unless it is an emergency and we both know there is no emergen…”.

“Hold it right there young woman before I teleport to your bedroom this moment!”Jessica yelled.

“Okay Tiger, couldn’t you find a prey for dinner tonight?" I asked.

“The only human I want to eat right now is the traitor I am speaking to”. Jessica yelled again.

“I am a traitor? Jessica, I keep telling you not to use words carelessly especially when you do not know the meaning”. I said.

“That was offensive, but I would visit that later as it ain’t a priority. Young lady could you please explain explicitly why and how you went on a date with that hunk of yours and didn’t fill the only human that tolerates your excesses with details of how the date went? Whatever happened to the girls code of always spilling the tea to your best girl? And if this isn’t betrayal at its peak I don’t know what it means anymore and FYI you my darling friend are a betrayal and another word for a betrayal is a TRAITOR! Jessica shouted and I could literally see flames coming out from her head.

“Wow!! That my friend was one hell of a speech and I am shaking in my boots!” I said sarcastically.

“Kendra Louisa Johnson daughter of Harry Johnson do not be SILLY!!

“Roger that captain!” I said before we both burst into laughter.

“Now speak traitor! What in the freaking world happened last night?!!”

“How can I speak when you keep yelling nonstop, calm down Jessica”. I said softly.

“Okay I am calm, can you tell me now”.

“Alright”, I said taking a deep breath.

“ Okay, go on”, Jessica said softly.

“Jessie, Henry is married”, I said softly.

“Henry is what? Why? How? Please explain”. Jessica asked confused.

“I am still as confused as you are till now.
Apparently, he is married and has two kids, his wife and kids are in Canada”.

“Oh shit! How did you find out?

“In the most embarrassing way”, I said sadly.

“Oh my love I am so sorry”, Jessica said concern laced in her voice.

“I got to find out at the restaurant last night. I was having the most amazing time of my life and it felt like nothing could ever go wrong. Jessie, it was perfect and yes I had butterflies in my stomach”.

“Oh dear….”

“While I enjoyed myself in the presence of he who I thought was the right one, a woman appeared”.

“A woman? His wife?”, Jessica gasped.

“Oh silly, this is not a Nollywood movie where the wife storms into to restaurant and pours the side chick water or acid”, I chuckled.

“Who was the woman that appeared then?”, I could sense that the suspense was killing her.

“She was his wife’s friend and she made the most embarrassing statement ever.

“What did she say?".

“I see you are busy with other things while my friend is away. While you are at it make sure you protect yourself as this generation isn’t to be trusted anymore”. I said while I wiped the tears from my eyes.

“Oh, shit!! She said all of that to you? The lady must’ve been very stupid and slow and what did Henry do?

“He sat there as speechless as I was,” I said letting the tears roll down.

“That dude is so foolish and stupid, a wicked, cheating, lying asshole”. Jessica screamed at the top of her voice.

“Jessica never in my life have I ever felt so small and embarrassed.
Last night, I quickly stood up from my chair and shamelessly walked out of the restaurant, making sure I didn’t break down in front of everyone who witnessed the horrible scene”.

“My darling I am so so sorry. Henry is a douchebag, how dare he lie and deceive you all this while?”.

“Jessie I am so hurt and it does feel like my heart is about to explode. The rule is never to date married men, and never to have any business with any married man. How did I miss it? How didn’t I see the signs?” I said amidst tears.

“It’s okay my darling, stop crying and be grateful that it wasn’t his wife who threw acid on you, or else you wouldn’t have lived to give me this hot and steamy gist”. Jessica said.

“Really Jessie? That’s all you could come up with?”

“Not really, but then again you should be grateful that nothing happened to you neither did you make the headlines in the tabloids”.

“Oh Lord have mercy”. I said

“Now that Henry is out of the way I need to hook you up with another hunk and this time I need to investigate him thoroughly”.

“No Jessie I am not interested”, I said screaming at the top of my voice.

“Oh yes, you are and there’s nothing you can do my love”.

With that, she ends the call abruptly not giving me the chance to object some more.
