When I saw this topic, I just said to myself, “Hmm, this one is kinda loud.” Because it is something we have all thought about a couple of times in this life, especially as a Nigerian living in Nigeria, okay let us be honest, this bad governance matter is not something that started today ,see the whole country is just like a boat with many captains, and everybody is paddling in different directions.
That is why, for me, I actually do agree that African countries especially Nigeria ,might really do better with an autocratic kind of system, not the wicked type o, where the person at the top will just start oppressing everybody and do anyhow. Nah.... but the kind where one strong and intentional leader will be in charge and make all the decisions with the good of the country in mind ,that way, we do not have to be dealing with senators, reps, governors, ministers, and all these other political positions where people are just there to embezzle money and do nothing.
Just look at our system now, too many people with opinions, but nothing to show for it, things are hard, People are suffering, Even the basics like electricity, water, education, these things are nothing to write home about, Every new government that comes in just starts afresh like we did not have a past, They do not build on what the last administration left behind, It is just vibes and more budget looting.
So I feel if it was just one person calling the shots, at least we can hold that one person responsible, you get? Right now, everybody is pointing fingers, shifting blame ,If something goes wrong, the president will blame the senate, the senate will blame the governors, the governors will blame the people, and the circle continues, so annoying, Nobody wants to take accountability at all , the country is just running like it is on autopilot.
I know some people will say autocracy can be dangerous and power can corrupt, which is very true, but then again, are we not already suffering under this democracy that is not even democratic? Ehn.... Prices are just rising, people are leaving the country daily, and graduates are selling pure water just to survive, shey you can imagine that kind of thing, If a single ruler with sense, compassion, and vision was in charge, maybe we would have at least some progress, just maybe.....
And yes, I do understand that no system is perfect, but for me, it is the results that matter, If democracy is not working for us, maybe it is just time to try something different ,because like this now, we are just going in circles ,going round and round ,with no real destination at all.
So yeah, I will agree to trying a system where one focused leader is in charge, We can always adjust again if it doesn’t work. But for now, this trial-and-error democracy we are running isn’t helping anybody, just except the rich and powerful.
Like this now we are just surviving ,nothing more....
That's our country for you Nigeria
This is thought provoking.
Transparency and accountability are long gone from our system.
And the idea for an intentional leader, is good, one who makes decisions for the greater good of it's citizens. But at the same time, I feel concerned about about certain things like...getting intoxicated by power which you also highlighted..
Thanks for sharing.
