Story time: the old lady

When I was 12 years old - I wrote my Autobiography. It was a school project. The last chapter of the book was "My Future". I wrote that I wanted to be a psychologist, nurse or an airline stewardess. I recall that my teacher discussed that my career choices were so different. I rebutted by saying that they were about caring for others. My teacher agreed.

As I made a stylish soft cover for my book - "My Future" was the first part of the book that was damaged - then it disappeared. That was probably a sign. I never pursued any of those professions but I never stopped caring.

Fast forwarding to my present life, I think people are often curious instead of caring. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes mishaps to bring people together. However, there are still some nice people around.

When my children were toddlers - I spent a lot of time in the local park. Often during our walks, I would see an old lady. At a certain point, she smiled as a form of greeting. Then one day, she said,
“Your children are darlings.”

As my children developed - the old lady aged. She started to use a walking stick. She could hardly carry her shopping bags. A few times, I brought her bags to her home. She doesn’t reside on my street but close enough. Whilst walking, we had pleasant conversations. We spoke about children, the weather or the neighbourhood. That was the extent of our conversations.

One afternoon, I saw her sitting on a bench. She beckoned for me to come over. She explained, “I am on my way to the supermarket but I am tired.”
My children and I shopped for her. They were excited to fill her shopping trolley with groceries. Thereafter she thanked me, then went home.

Another time I saw her on the same bench. She had already done her shopping. She told me that my oldest daughter once offered to help her. She complimented me by saying,
“It was nice of her to offer. You’ve raised polite children.”

At least a year passed and I didn't see the old lady. I figured she had moved to an old people’s home or passed away. I asked a neighbour but no one knew. It was sad. Although we’ve only exchanged pleasantries, I’ve seen her in the neighbourhood for at least 19 years.

Then last week, whilst walking along her street, I saw her getting into a taxi. She gave me the biggest most beautiful smile, then gleefully said, “Hello Mistress!”
I was happy to see her. Her tall stature was a bit more gaunt and bent. Nevertheless, she seemed cheerful and well.

As the taxi drove away, she smiled and waved. It was like seeing an old friend again. It's interesting how we both seem to appreciate our fleeting interactions. Sometimes all it takes are these small gestures. I hope to see her again soon.

Thank you @mdasein - in some societies old people are treasured but it others it is not the same. We will become old one day and I think we everyone adds something to society and therefore it would be nice if society takes care of the aged. I try to do my small part.

The old woman has some kind of love for your family especially your children and I'm glad that your children made her smile by filling her trolleys with groceries

A beautiful story! I love these kind of interactions. Sometimes very few words are needed.
A little bit of kindness goes a long way.

Awwwwwww this was so heartwarming to read. I have a couple of old women like that on my street, they always greet and wave at me whenever I am going out and they usually say "Go, come" meaning go to wherever you are going to and come back, do not die there just come back in one peace.

Your story about the old lady is a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness and compassion. Even though you and the old lady only exchanged pleasantries, your fleeting interactions clearly made a difference in both of your lives.

In the same way, in childhood, a person dreams in the same way that I will become this when I grow up. Changes the field.
