Rethinking Cultural Norms: A Path To Positive Change.

I actually do not agree to some things and I was taggedstubborn, because sincerely, I really want to know why a woman must kneel down to serve her husband even when she's sick or when her knees ached, she must, not doing so means she did not respect her husband... as a man also you shouldn't cry at your mother's burial, when I heard that, I was like..is this a joke, as a child as well you must continue to greet and respect that uncle and aunty of yours who has molested you before in the past. Tradition must not be questioned, why? Because it is who we are.

But, are we not tired of worshipping silence in the name of culture. I know and agree that tradition was everywhere....in the way we dress, speak, do our events and all, even check out some of our proverbs, most of it warmed my heart. The way we gret elders, attend events, our names..they always carry stories and the way a whole community help raise a child....ohh, I really hold those ones very dear.

But then, I had to unlearn some, like that tradition that made my aunty shave her head and sleep on the bare floor right beside her dead husband for seven days....I don't know what sort of cruelty that is and is being tagged as custom.

There are times traditions comes as love, atimes it shows up as law. And honestly, not all that is old is good, some things are old, hsve been there for long and are harmful, we say that is how it's been done, that is how we met it, but then, must it continue like that...Our fsthers married off their daughters at eleven to twelve years of age, our fathers beat their wives, they beat up their sons into men who no longer feel, there's this harmful traditional practice done on our girls called Female Genital Mutilation....what are these traditions.

I am not saying tradition is the enemy, what I am saying is... It should be questioned, it should be checked to see what fruits exactly it is bearing, of a truth, there's beauty in it (tradition) but then, theres also danger in obeying it blindly. .

Tradition has help us love, it has help us unite, during certain festivals we see how strangers turn into siblings, we see how it bring together people, see also how we tend to share foods to our neighbors while celebrating certain festivities, that is what I love, that communalism is the part I want preserved.

Tradition plays the role of fire, we are the one to decide what we want it to do, either to help cool/warm us or to burn us. And maybe, just maybe tradition really needs to be checked and adjusted, some renovations need to be done... just my own honest opinion.
