Perhaps, one of the most common sayings we've come across is “Experience is the best teacher.” Now and then, you hear someone say them in conversations or sometimes in rebukes, possibly annoyed because someone refused or was refusing to heed to some needful and important advice. When you hear the statement uttered, it's an indication that the individual is left to find out the way, the hard way.
To a large extent, the statement reflects a truth. Now, the issue is that when the statement is uttered, it's mostly in a sense that suggests that the speaker is hopeful that the one addressed gets a lesson from life's experience due to the advice they're not heeding. I would like to say that it reflects more. It should be a way of cautioning us about life and what we can learn from the several experiences it presents, to serve as lessons.
Of course, every human walking this earth must have had some entanglement with life. Such moments or situations turn into experiences that could go on to impact our lives forever. Further even becoming lessons for a younger generation coming. There are lessons I've learnt from life experiences of others shared with me, and hopefully I won't make them too. Likewise, my own experiences should serve as lessons and encouragement to others.
Several resounding lessons from life experiences have come with impacts. I did share one experience on this platform concerning a friend. While the narrative was around not taking revenge, I also found one meaningful lesson that I took home. So, I shared how I helped him to do a task, with the hope that a time will come when I'll need his help and he'll reciprocate. Long story short, he couldn't, I didn't take it well and wanted to take revenge.
Well, I didn't take the revenge. But here's the other lesson apart from not taking revenge or expecting something when you help. That is, don't fully rely on the help of others. What you can do, try to do it, and when you're short of strength or ability then hope for that help. The help we can get is needful, but coming to a point where we totally trust in someone's help shouldn't be. If we put such total hope, then it should be in God. Of course, that's necessary.
Another lesson that experiences from life have taught me is the need not to follow the crowd. Thankfully, it's a lesson I've taken to heart. From stories of some persons I knew or just heard of, this was the take-home for me. Don't follow the crowd, the multitude isn't always in the right direction.
In a world where the crowd mentality seems to be eating up a lot of people, especially the younger ones, this turned out to be a worthy and handy lesson from experiences in life. There were times I tried to follow the crowd but it didn't go very well. Since the experiences of others are meant to teach us, I learnt how destructive this can be from their experiences. It remains a helpful life lesson, and thanks to some life experiences.
