The haunted house

Curiosity has always been one of man’s greatest drivers. It has led to many great advancements. However, in several instances, it has led to the downfall of some. The same can be said about four friends, Jenna, Emily, Andrea and Karen.

The four friends have always let their curiosity drive them immensely. It was what brought them together in the first place. They all lived in the same neighbourhood, which enabled them to form a strong bond. So when they heard about the haunted house across the street, their curiosity got the better of them.

There have been spooky tales about the house located in the most isolated part of the neighbourhood. No one seemed to live in the house. No one seemed to own the house. Nobody had ever been seen coming out of the house.

The girls decided that they would break into the house and uncover the mysteries behind the house. They crafted their plan perfectly. The time eventually came for them to break in. It was late at night. They broke in, despite seeing several “Do not trespass” signs right from the gate. They got into the house and they found it empty. There was absolutely nothing in it. No furniture, no properties, just nothing. Before they knew it, there was a rush of gas from a vent in the house and then they began feeling sleepy. Within a minute, they were all knocked out.

They woke up trapped in a room. The door was locked. Next they heard a voice over the speaker.

“You have made a huge mistake trespassing where you shouldn’t have. Only one of you will make it out of here alive. You will play a series of games, and with each game, the loser gets killed. So if you want to stay alive, just keep winning. However there is a huge possibility none of you will make it out of here alive".

The girls began to panic. No one knew what they were up to that night, and that meant there was no help coming.

"Please let us go, we're sorry for trespassing. I don't want to die, please!" Emily said, looking for sympathy as she cried out.

There was no reply from the voice on the speaker.

"Come on. I don't think anything will happen to us. That person is just bluffing" Karen said.

As soon as she said that, there was a gunshot, and they found a bullet lodged on the part of the wall just above Karen's head. That was how they knew that there were guns hidden.

"I believe that should convince you all now" The Man said over the speaker.

Next, the door opened, and the girls stepped into another room. In this room, there was blood splashed all over the walls. It made the girls shudder in fear of what awaits them.

"For your first game, there are 5 balls for each of you. You have to stand by the wall and throw the ball into the basket at the other wall. You have 60 seconds to do this. Anyone who doesn't have all 5 balls in their basket when the time elapses will be eliminated" The Man said.

The timer started. All four girls began immediately.

Andrea had it easy. She played basketball a lot. Within 30 seconds, Andrea had all 5 of her balls in her basket. Jenna and Karen were almost there. By the 45th second, they had their 5th ball in the basket. However, Emily, on the other hand, was having a difficult time. 50 seconds had gone by and she still had 2 balls left. She began sweating profusely and her hands were shaking.

"Come on Emily, you can do it. Just relax and focus" Andrea said, trying to motivate Emily.

Emily managed to put one more ball in, and when she threw the last ball, it rotated around the circumference of the basket. The girls watched in anxiety, hoping that the ball would fall in. Their hearts were pounding, but Emily’s heart pounded the most. Fortunately, the ball fell into the basket, and the 60 seconds elapsed.

The girls shouted with joy, happy that they hadn’t lost anybody yet. Another door opened and they went into another room. It was time for another game. This time they had to solve their individual puzzles. They each had puzzle pieces that they had to figure out and put together. Each of them had 5 minutes to do so.

They got to work. Jenna was the first to finish. It took only 3 minutes to piece her puzzle together. The other three were having a hard time. By the fourth minute, their puzzles were yet to be put together. Panic started to set in but they all managed to keep their cool. Eventually they solved their puzzles before the time elapsed.

“Congratulations on completing the second game. You have all made it this far. The last game is about to begin. Please step into the next room.” The man on the speaker said as a door opened.

The girls walked in. There were four boxes, each filled with not just one mouse, but a lot of mice.

“For the next game, you are to lay down in the box, close it and stay there for 30 minutes. Anyone who makes even a little movement, or gets out of the box before the time elapses will be eliminated” the man said over the speaker.

The girls were all scared of mice. They had a look on their face that showed they were irritated and scared. They had to overcome their fears if they were to stay alive.

Each of them got into their own box and the timer started. The mice were all over them. They had to stay calm, for as long as they could. 15 minutes in, Karen looked very uncomfortable, especially as there was a mouse at her right ear. She was about to freak out, but somehow she kept her cool. The girls stayed in the box until the time elapsed. They jumped out in joy. They all made it. As they celebrated their triumph, gas was released from the vents and the girls fell asleep.

Moments later, they woke up by the side of the road at night. They went to their individual homes, grateful to be alive, but still in shock.
