Working Out Isn't Easy.

(edited)

About six months ago, I decided to start working out, honestly, I don’t even know what pushed me, Okay I know, ... Maybe because everyone was shouting “fit fam” or maybe because I just wanted to look a bit lighter, well In my head I was like, “Workout no hard na, just small stretching, squatting and skipping.” But omo, I didn't know that I was entering a war zone.

My sister’s friend Ola, he was the one that turned to my coach, this guy ehn, always looking fit, chest everywhere, full of energy, always talking about consistency, and I will just look at him like, “Abeg, just show me small moves make I do.”

First day I we started the work out session early in the morning , I wore my joggers like I was preparing for Olympics. Ola just looked me and laughed.
“You sure say you ready?” he ask.
“Of course na,” I replied with confidence. “After all, I have watch people do squats online, e no too hard.”
He just laugh that kind laugh of “you go soon understand.”

We started warm-up first, stretching and jogging, as in I was forming , feeling cool within me, then he said, “Let’s start with 20 squats.” Omo, by the time I reach number 10, my thighs were already burning as if they were on fire and I looked at him like, “Are you sure this thing doesn't kill person?”
He just smiled and said, “Normal. Keep going.”

Next was plank. If you know plank, you will know that it's like a serious punishment, I got down, arranged my hands, started, I said in my mind, “Two minutes, no big deal.” Before 30 seconds my whole body was shaking like an old generator.
“Ola, abeg, is this one not advanced level?” I shouted.
He was just laughing, “Don’t sweat it, you are doing fine, this is just beginning.”

Na so “beginning” wan finish me?. After plank, he brought skipping, sit-ups, lunges, and everything and when I got home later that morning, I was not able to climb the stairs properly, my sister was just laughing, “You wanted flat tummy shey,? Now see you, walking like old woman.”

Still sha, I didnt give up immediately, I kept going for some weeks, Ola was always shouting, “No cheating! Push yourself!” I respect his energy oh, but inside my mind, I was praying for one good excuse not to show up.

By the second month, my body had adjusted a bit, but truth be told, consistency no gree me, I started skipping days, One day turned to two, then one week, and before I knew it , I just stop going altogether.

At the end, I only lasted like one month and two weeks, and sincerely, I thought workout was something easy, but it is not, that fire I felt in my thighs each time was like reminder that growth doesn't come cheap, i mean fitness is not a joke at all, it is discipline, lifestyle, and serious mind battle.

Ola still teases me till now, “So when are you coming back?” And me I will just laugh it off , So whenever I see people that are consistent with working out now, I just give them respect because me have tasted it and saw that working out is not child’s play at all.

I really enjoyed this story. The way you described your first day with Ola as coach was funny, especially struggling with squats and plank. I could imagine your thighs burning and your sister laughing when you couldn’t climb the stairs.

I really love reading through this post of yours and even though Ola was trying to help you achieve your goal, it can only be possible if you were consistent.

Sometimes, things are easily said than done and am sure you tried your best 👍

Yup, you need to be consistent and just start. Having someone motivate you is always helpful.

Having an exercise regimen requires a lot of sacrifice and pain, but the truth is that people who maintain an exercise regimen are very disciplined.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Good day.
