There was this guy in our area called Tobi, and if there was one thing everybody knew about him, it was that he never stayed anywhere for long....

One week he would want to become a photographer, the next week he was learning coding,
After that he was selling perfumes
, then crypto, then fitness coaching.
At some point I stopped asking what he was doing because by the time he finished answering, it had already changed, one evening we were sitting outside Mama Peace's shop eating roasted corn.
Tobi sighed dramatically,"I think I'm starting a YouTube channel." I didn't even look at him.
"Until next Thursday."
He frowned.
"You don't believe in me."
"I believe in you. I just don't believe in your attention span." Mama Peace laughed from behind us.
"Leave am. Tomorrow e go say na podcast." We all laughed, including Tobi.
The funny thing was, he was actually talented, he learned things really fast, the problem was staying long enough to become good at them.
A few days later I saw our old secondary school teacher, Mr. Okon, he looked at Tobi carrying another ring light, "What business today?"
"YouTube."
Mr. Okon smiled.
"Good."
Tobi looked surprised, "You mean it?"
"I do." Then the old man added something, "But don't become a rolling stone." We both looked confused.
"You know the saying?"
"A rolling stone gathers no moss." Tobi scratched his head.
"So... moss is bad?" Mr Okon laughed.
"Not always, but the saying simply means that someone who keeps moving from one thing to another doesn't stay long enough to build anything."
Tobi shrugged,
"I just don't want to be stuck."
"There's a difference between growing and constantly starting over." That sentence stayed in my head.
For a whole month, Tobi actually posted videos, every single week.
We were shocked, the first video got twenty views, yhe second got fifteen, the third got nine.
I could already see disappointment loading, One afternoon he burst into my house, "I'm done."
I didn't even ask with what.
"YouTube?"
He nodded "Nobody is watching" , I handed him a bottle of water.
"How many videos did your favorite creators make?" "Hundreds."
"And you're quitting after four?" He kept quiet.
Later that evening we met Mr. Okon again, Tobi complained.
"I've tried", The old man raised an eyebrow.
"No."
"I have"
"You started"
Silence, then he pointed at a small mango tree beside the road.
"You see that tree?"
"Yes"
"I planted it years ago"
Tobi looked surprised, "It used to be this small."
He held two fingers apart, "People laughed."
"So?"
"I kept watering it"
"When did it start producing mangoes?" "Years later."
Tobi stared at the tree, People were actually buying mangoes from it now, the old man smiled.
"If I moved it every week because it wasn't growing fast enough, would it still be here?"
"No"
"Exactly..."
For once, Tobi didn't have a comeback, the next day he picked up his camera again, this time he made himself one promise.
"No quitting for six months."
His videos weren't perfect, sometimes the sound was terrible, sometimes the lighting looked like NEPA was fighting him, sometimes he forgot his lines and laughed at himself.
But people started liking that, comments slowly increased.
Someone wrote....
"I like how real you are."
Another person said,
"I've been watching since your fifth video."
Fifth....
Not first, that hit differently.
Months later, Mama Peace called us over, she was holding her phone proudly.
"Tobi, you're inside my phone," He laughed, "That's the point."
"See people commenting from Ghana."
She couldn't believe it.
Neither could he,As we walked home that evening, Tobi nudged me, "You know what?"
"What?"
"I'm glad I didn't quit."
I smiled
"I know"
He laughed,
"I almost became a perfume seller again....."
"Please don't."
"No promises."
We both burst into laughter, sometimes life makes you think moving is always progress, sometimes changing direction feels easier than staying where the work gets hard.
But looking at Tobi, I realized something, the biggest growth doesn't always happen because you're the most talented person in the room.
Sometimes it happens because you simply stayed long enough for your roots to hold, Maybe that's what "a rolling stone gathers no moss" really means.
Not that change is bad, Just that some dreams only grow when you stop rolling and give yourself time to bloom.
