That very first night that she got my attention, the sky was exceptionally clear, and this is very unusual because we are not often graced with that type of atmosphere in Port Harcourt, but that particular night shone so bright as if the sun, moon, and stars were coming together to form their own galaxy. I went outside to catch some cool breeze shortly after the wobbling light was taken off, sitting on one of the white plastic chairs by the gate.
I saw this light skinned curvy, and tall lady walk past, one of my next door neighbors that I had come across just a few times, but we have never exchanged words. Then suddenly, after like three steps after she passed me, she stopped, looked at the sky, and said quietly with her soft voice that almost no one close to her almost didn't hear, "This is unusual; everywhere is looking radiant tonight."
Out of reflex, I giggled so low and said, "I thought I was only the one who saw that, so you noticed that too?"
I was not expecting her response, but surprisingly, she looked at me, amazed, and smiled, with her dimples making everywhere look much brighter. "Yes, I noticed, and it is real. I love it. It seems they are passing a message across to us."
That was actually the very first time we got to talk. Nothing striking, just the atmospheric cuts and two strangers talking amidst it in the dark. But I kept remembering that moment because there was this special thing about her angelic, soft voice; her gaze felt short but sure. It was as if she had been taking classes on that for a while before that moment.
A couple of days after this happened, we got much closer and started relating with eachother more. That place where we first talked because our conversation zone every night went from things we never told ourselves to things that got us scared, but we didn't say it out loud. At times it felt like we had known each other since eternity, which got scary yet almost perfect. At a point, I have to ask myself, "How did this happen? Was it predestined, or was it just a coincidence?"
Few months later, storms of life arose to throw some life tests at us: different responsibilities from all directions, disagreements, and separation. But every time things might want to put a distance between us, something always brings us together again. Information that I am in need of, a memory that is always with me, a safe zone for me.
This made me realize that some things in life are not random; they feel planted and waiting for it to spring up by an incidence because they have been predestined to happen, just like what happened that night under the unusual Port Harcourt sky, two next door neighbors paying attention to the same thing.
Maybe it was destiny, maybe it happened by coincidence, but I like to believe that it was written in the stories of the galaxy.
Thank you for reading.

What a beautiful story. The way you described the unusual clear sky in Port Harcourt felt magical, almost like destiny setting the stage. I especially loved how her soft voice and dimples brightened that special first conversation.

The fact that you both had a special conversation place and memory... I'm jealous 😁 . But, truly some things are just destined to happen and I think you both were destined for each other, that's why no matter what happens you always find a way to come back together.
