BREAKING RULES

Growing up, I used to often say that the rules were made to be broken, I watched someone say it in a movie I can’t remember again, but I guess I was just so mischievous that breaking the rules just felt great. Then I would do it without a second thought especially when I knew that I could get away with the consequences. By the time I was 16, breaking the rules became my norm, I would sneak out of boarding school to go clubbing with my friends, we would always get out house master drunk so he would be out of his senses or sleeping by the time we got back which was usually around 4:00am he was either still snoring or having a really great hangover. That man was quite resilient to be honest.

There was one time he caught us coming back, we had already scaled the fence when he suddenly came upon us, we were really surprised because we saw him drink about two out of the 5 bottles of beer we got for him before leaving. I was almost scared to be honest, not until he started saying jagoons. We couldn’t make sense of anything coming out from his mouth. We knew we had nothing to fear when he saw a small demarcation on the ground and went back 5 steps to jump it only to end up falling and when it looked like he wasn’t getting up, we helped him back to his apartment. But then there was an experience that made me start following the rules, and that was when I saw a person die in front of me while coming from the club.

We just came out that night going home, we obviously weren’t the only underaged students to go sneak into a club and I knew this guy was a freshman in a university in the same city my school was located. I know the school also had a tight security, because I had friends there who had sneaked me there a couple of times, That day I saw a drunk driver almost ran me over, this guy was at my back talking to me to come over to his dom one of these days when suddenly it happened so fast and he was on the ground lifeless.I knew if I had stepped back by even an inch it would have been me laying in a pool of blood. We were all scared that day, I wanted to assist him and maybe take him to the hospital when an adult came in and shouted he’s dead and before you knew it everyone started running.

I really wanted to pick him up that day, but I knew I couldn’t do it without getting caught, so like everyone else, I ran too. When we finally entered a bus going back to school, the only people we saw in that bus were men who looked like robbers or ritualists, or maybe it was our mind playing tricks on us. My friends and I were so uncomfortable that we dropped before our location and started walking on the road at about 4:00 am that morning. We were lucky that no one caught us in school, but that was the last time any of us broke the rules again, especially me. I believe the rules would save us in a crucial moment. It might not seem much, but it was there for a reason.
