Generosity is priceless

The world's economies are generally heading for collapse. The result is more and more poverty and difficulties of survival. On the streets, or online on social media, more and more people are asking for their basic needs for surviving.

How do we react when they reach out to us for help? Should we help? Should we be suspicious? There are those who say: “Instead, offer a rod and teach them how to fish”. What do you think about this?

I think generosity is something innate in every individual. My late father often told me: “You will never be materially rich. Give away what little you have”. Yes, but it was the upbringing he gave me that made me that way.

I had a girlfriend who used to tell me if I knew what a fool I was making of myself, when I didn't even question who was asking me and what they were asking for.

I don't do it to make my day happier. I do it because I'm used to sharing what I have. Even though I know that the purposes of giving are not fulfilled. I don't care what people do with their money. I just want my conscience to match what I do. That's it.

I'm not looking for anything return. However, a "thank you" is always welcome. I've been saddened by participating and helping out, and I haven't even gotten a thank you back. This sadness is easily transmuted into compassion for those who practice ingratitude.

It's a good reminder that the act of giving itself can be meaningful, regardless of the outcome.

1 - For the sake of respect, the photograph illustrating the publication is not a real beggar. It's a theatrical performance at a Medieval Fair.
