Friday Night Lights, Football, and a 1000 HIVE Powerup
If you live in small town America, there is one phrase that you often hear when late summer early fall arrives. "Friday Night Lights" is the coined term for the football (American) game that is happening in your community. With the exception of the first couple weeks of the season, they pretty much always happen on Friday night.
Hence the first part of the phrase. The second part of the phrase should be pretty obvious if you have ever been to a football stadium. Need a hint? Take a look at the photo above. It's a pretty big deal for kids to be playing under the lights of the stadium. It's something the younger kids grow up dreaming about and sadly for some of the high school kids, it could be the most exciting thing they ever do in their lives.
For my post today I thought I would take a bit of a prompt from @galenkp and talk a little bit about my #weekend.
I already talked last week about my Thursday night in my @bozz.sports account. @mrsbozz and I went and watched my niece's varsity team play volleyball. They beat the other team in straight sets, so it was pretty exciting. It was a great way to start the weekend.
On Friday night, we drove back over to my wife's old high school (sorry if that gets a Steely Dan song stuck in your head now), to watch our friends daughter play in the band. We got there a little bit before halftime, so we got to watch some of the football action on the field.
Fun fact in the photo above, the day before this game, the high school had an incident where a student brought a gun to school. Given that fact, there was a pretty heavy law enforcement presence at this game even though the situation had bee resolved. You ca see one of the officers off to the left.
It's pretty sad that I am able to talk about stuff like this as if it were a normal every day occurrence. Thankfully, no one got hurt and it has handled quickly and safely.
The band sits in the stands and plays during the game, but the big show for them is at halftime. Before they took they place on the field, we got to watch the dance team do a routine. It's been a couple of years, but this dance team actually got some national recognition when they made it to one of the final rounds of America's Got Talent. Some of the young ladies on this team were part of that group in their earlier years.
They did a really great job. You can tell they put a lot of time and effort into their practice.
Finally, it was time for the marching band to take the field. It was a little heartbreaking to see them on the field. Simply for the fact that there was so few of them. When I was in high school (a different one than this), I didn't really play sports. I was in band though, part of the percussion section to be exact.
I think it is safe to say our band was at least two to three times larger than this one. We were a smaller school than this one too. I think that just speaks to how the arts are kind of being left behind in school. It doesn't seem there is the same desire for kids to be in band.
It's not like it's ever been cool, but it's a fun experience from what I remember. I often look back on my time in marching and concert band as some of my favorite memories from school.
Despite the small size of the band, they did really well playing songs like YMCA from the Village People, and Gonna Fly Now from Rocky. They executed the formations on the field really well and it was a fun time watching them. After the show we got to talk to our friends daughter a little and she was really excited that we had made the trip to watch her. That alone made it worth it!
We didn't stay for the rest of the game, we decided to get home and get some rest as we needed to head downstate the next day to watch our youngest niece play soccer with the travel team that she is on.
If you want a recap on that, you are going to have to go and read my @bozz.sports post that I write today. That is going to be almost fully dedicated to my little number 4. It was really fun to watch her play and even though I am not a huge soccer fan, I don't mind watching when it is them playing!
Sunday was October 1st, so that means it was time to power up some of the HIVE that I have been stashing away over the past month. It's been hard to keep up because I have been going pretty heavy on buying the DBOND token, but I was still able to scrounge up enough tokens to do a 1000 HIVE power up. Not as good as the power up by @mypathtofire, but it was still pretty dang good. Congrats to him on hitting 100K HP by the way. Quite an accomplishment.
It makes his nickname even more fitting. Both for the fact that he is on fire stacking HIVE, and for the acronym that FIRE has come to represent (financial independence or something like that).
It was a pretty great weekend even though we did quite a bit of running around. Next weekend we are heading down to Ohio to see the house my niece is renting at university and to watch my other niece play some Fall softball. I am really looking forward to it!

Thanks Bozz. It looks like a great weekend. We were also watching the football (European) but early Sunday morning. You cant beat watching some local team sports and good when your own kids play.

That’s a huge power up. I too was able to join hpud but only for 50 hive power. While relatively small. Im still happy about it hehe. Thanks for sharing your weekend, its always nice to read your stories.

I have never seen a live match in a stadium that is as big as this but I hope I experience it someday

I hope you are able to as well. This is just one of our local high schools, so it is actually pretty small compared to what you might get at a university or a professional stadium. Those things are huge!

Thank you! This is one of the nicer fields in the area. They just put in artificial turf a year or two ago. It's still nothing like what you might see down south. Head down to Texas and their high school stadiums look like professional facilities!

Man, that is a tiny band. Mine in HS was also much larger. It's a shame to hear the arts are being left behind. The arts may not contribute to those "all important" test scores, but they enrich our lives in so many ways and contribute more to the culture than almost anything else.
Yeah, it seems to be across the board. I know the band where I work is pretty small too. I remember when I was in school we had two or three rows of just clarinet players. Ten to fifteen flute players etc.

Congratulations on awesome power up! Looks like a nice weekend, the only thing you were missing was that nice barrel of Buffalo Trace! I would love to have one of those too but that ten grand is a lo of money!
I ended up drinking some Old Forester instead. Not a barrel. but a nice bottle of 1920 that I have been working on for a while.
