My friend and I were trying to come up with possible business ideas for her recently and we met a roadblock. I decided to do my homework and came up with some ideas. The simple way of coming up with a smart small business idea is finding a solution to problems around you. So I looked out for products and services in demand and which will need only a small capital to begin.
We had a capital of 25,000 Naira ($43) to work with which seemed limiting at first but the whole idea is to start small. These are businesses that you can start from the corner of your room and they have proven to be profitable as long as you put in the work and are strategic.
The first thought that pops in my head when I think of a small business is food. Food will always and forever be in demand as long as people are alive to eat. You can choose to cook right in your kitchen on request or you offer private chef services.
The best part is you don't need to have a lot of capital as you can run a pay before service that allows you to get your ingredients with the customer's money. Your capital goes into the packaging and marketing of your brand.
I have bought phone cases from Aliexpress several times and when I did the math, I would make a 100% profit if I decided to sell them. These sites are easily accessible to everyone but a lot of people would rather pay for the convenience of getting their items in a few days rather than waiting for over a month to get it shipped to Nigeria. That's where you come in. They are very inexpensive, some cases sell for less than a dollar and you even get free delivery for some.
In Nigeria, thrifted clothes are referred to as okrika and were previously looked down on as poor people clothes. Now, it even is stylish and on-trend to wear thrifted clothes and everyone that knows someone is a thrift seller online. It may seem like the market is saturated but if you're able to sift good quality clothes, you're definitely going to be making a lot of sales as the market is mostly saturated with poor quality.
Apart from thrift clothes and shoes, other thrift items you can sell are home decor and very random items. If you sell online, a very aesthetically pleasing page does the trick. You can sell random items like vases, bowls, e.tc., anything that gives off the vintage vibe really, young people are into stuff like that.
Where to get your items? All major markets across the states in the country are home to these gems. Most of the market sellers have no idea how valuable some items are so you'd be getting a lot at steal prices.
There are a lot of anime lovers in Nigeria and anime conventions have gradually become a thing. One time I wanted to order a cosplay outfit and I just couldn't find what I wanted as there weren't many vendors with a lot of options. You can have several cosplay outfits and accessories shipped to you and you resell to the very huge but uncharted cosplay market. They're also inexpensive and you can start with as low as $43.
People love to smell nice and they also love their spaces to smell nice. I actually thought of scented candles because I've wanted to get them for the longest time. You can start with a few candles and gradually expand as you make sales. If it's something you're into, you can learn to make them on your own and create your unique brand.
Recently, I noticed I received monthly commissions from shopping on Jumia Nigeria and I later realized I had signed up for their sales agent program years ago. Whenever I meet the required monthly sales, I get commissions and bonuses. You can decide to sign up for sales agent arrangements like this where you shop for others and get commissions on your orders. The most you'd spend on will be for delivering the packages yourself if you have to.
In order to begin any of these businesses, you need to find your niche and discover what works for you. Also, identify the trends and customer saturation to better understand the market.
As with all businesses, these small businesses require consistency and a whole lot of dedication to succeed. Start small, and start strong.
These are only a few suggestions that are feasible to startup with $43 and I could share more if you're interested.

Wow, I have been thinking of a little business to start up with lately and the food vendor is a good idea although I did use to deal on baking but have not really had enough customers since I started newly.
The scented candles seem like a nice idea, although I can not grasp what it looks like and how the sales will be but I will google about it, ask around and see how much it is sold.
Maybe you can be of help to me too by doing a little research since I did not know about it before.
Baking is huge. Since you're newly started, I think you should focus on it and see where it leads.
Sure, I'll look for useful links I can send to you
Alright, thank you and I will be waiting for the links.

Out of all these, I'll prefer importing and that's where phone pouch comes in.
I'll pick it over others.
Good choice. The cosplay items can also be imported too. You can get them on Aliexpress.
