Today has been an interesting day. So many different projects going on that I wasn't sure I would even have a whole lot of time to look at Hive, much less finish up a post. I decided it was time to dive back into the archive of posts I have started in the past but never quite got around to finishing. Fortunately, I found one that is really pretty interesting. I think the reason I never got around to finishing it up is because the silver object I'm sharing comes from a rather obscure location. It's one I had never even heard of until I happen to buy the coin some years ago, I'm not even sure where I picked it up anymore...
This coin is really nice in that it celebrates the 500th Anniversary of the discovery is the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe way back in 1470. The coin is from the same islands which is a former Portuguese colony, thus everything on the coin is written in Portuguese. I can speak and read both English and Spanish, but almost nothing in Portuguese sadly. But I thought some of you Portuguese speakers might enjoy this coin!

From numista.com
The coin is a 50 Escudos and composed of .650 silver, so not pure. It does contain 0.376 Troy ounces of silver with a value of $28.01 at current melt prices. But the coin could easily sell for at least $35 as is in it's current state! I personally just really like how it looks, which is why I bought it in the first place knowing little more about it than it's silver content! That and that is had to be an anniversary coin by the dates, but it caught my eye for sure and I've kept it ever since in my stack!

Silver prices continue to be tumultuous ever since the start of the Iran conflict. I think many big silver and gold holders sold some of their metals to invest in oil and the prices were as they were surging and there was a lot of money to be made. The big question now will be, is this the start of a true resolution or just more of the same? Time will tell, but until that it is settled I expect the precious metals markets to be a little bumpy!

From kitco.com, silver over the last five days
I'm still holding onto my silver stack and won't be selling any time soon. It's a great way to build personal wealth and pass it down to future generations!

This small island nation is composed of two archipelagos off the the western coast of Africa. The were discovered by Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar in December of 1470. At the time they were completely devoid of any human habitation. However, their proximity to the equator and rich soil soon made them a slave trade stronghold as they produced sugar in plantations. Eventually sugar was phased out and cocoa became the most important crop for the islands. Portugal officially banned slavery in 1876, however, there were instances of forced labor on the islands as late as the late 1890's.
The islands gained their independence in 1975, when the Communist party took hold of the islands. They outlawed all other political parties but were ousted in the 1990 constitutional reform. Since they have had free and transparent elections until this day. Cocoa remains their primary export even presently. If you're interested I left the link to Wikipedia in my references! They do have some great natural beauty from the pictures I saw though!

Nice share! A rare piece from an unexpected place—who else has even heard of São Tomé and Príncipe before this?
I've never heard of these islands before. Not surprising given how many there are.
Cool piece.
