Revamp sportstalksocial or build a better option from the ground up?

The sports community on hive had great potential when it was launched first. Sports is massive across the globe with hundreds of millions of fans involved in everything from soccer to extreme frisbee. Thousands of games followed by millions and a huge target audience.

Sports is big in every country. It crosses boundaries and race. Religion and language. Now find a way to monetize that interest and you are onto a winner. Over a billion people watched the world cup final.

Top sports sites in the world:
Yahoo sports - 125m unique monthly visitors.
ESPN - 80m UMV
Bleacherreport - 40M UMV

Even a small Irish site with under 10 employees and global rank of 43,000 is generating 2m-5m per year.

These are two of the top five sports sites in Ireland with a population of roughly 6M people and they are generating huge numbers.

Then you have sports talk.

Some people would like to take action.

The site and the tribe itself is a stalled work in progress. Nothing has changed or improved over the past two years and some people would like to get it moving again.

Cryptosimplify is trying to start that change and motivate the community to take action. You can read his post and some of the feedback at this link here,Sportstalksocials future. which is mostly about changing the admin team and putting control in the hands of a core team to move the tribe forward. My name is on the post just to offer opinions and help where I can.

My personal opinion.

Personally I don't think that the tribe is fixable from where it is right now. With that said I'll offer my help where I can.

What I would like to see happen is a team of people to build a new sports site from the ground up.

My response to the conversation went a little along these lines.

I think that a tribe should be a business rather than just a community. It takes a lot of time and effort to set up and maintain a tribe then add in a monetized layer through hive and it's more than just a group of people sharing posts.
Sports has the potential to be a massive tribe if it's done right. A proper website, communities, mobile app and a million users over time.
Built from the ground up and with proper sustainable tokenomics and a good business model that creates income and pays for itself.
If enough people want to try and improve what we have already then i'll help where i can and try to make the best of it but what i would love to see is a real team of people that sit down and draw up a new site that is done right from the get go.
The community on sportstalk would soon move over once they see a much better product with long term potential.
Either option would be a marathon that could end in failure but that is every single start up. It would need start up funds but could generate a revenue soon after development and launch. Some to the team for further development and the rest back to the token holders through dividends or burns.

My yes list.

  • New community website.
  • Based on short form content.
  • Link to longer written posts on your profile.
  • Built as a business based on ad revenue.
  • Proper verified authors on front page.
  • Easy log in and use.
  • Mobile app for the masses.
  • Mini games for users.
  • New token distribution model.

This is all just theory and conversation starting but it is what I would like to see as a future project. If Leo hits $10 then I'll fund it myself but until then it is all in my head.

The no list.

  • A DAO.
  • Massive token inflation.
  • Another hive.blog based front end.
  • Actifit posts. (Maybe as short form content.)

Thoughts??

I am happy this is being discussed and ideas are being raised as who knows where this cam lead over the coming months. I agree as a tribe Sports should be the biggest around by a long way and would like to see this happen at some point.

Sports should be taking the lead form LEO and building a full user experience on top of hive without users seeing the underbelly.

Clean, smooth, fun and growing.

I know that you're up for change anyway so it's good to have those conversations.

If anything is to happen it will be a long slow process.

I certainly think that there is a lot more potential for organic traffic coming into the site.

I have my own small website dedicated to T20 cricket, it generates about half a million hits a year predominantly from a handful of pages that contain specific statistics and records.

One of the reasons I’ve never thought of moving that content over to Sportstalk or Hive in general is that it requires constant updating and that’s just not possible as things stand.

Having a front end that can bring in new sports fans and generate revenue would be a game changer

0.00966058 BEE

That's exactly it. A small site from one author is generating that kind of traffic and yet a much larger site with dozens of authors is generating almost nothing.

Good quality content that attracts web views rather than just generic blogs with no search value.

A new Sports site should have away of rewarding page views rather than stake weighted voting as a much better motivation for authors to create real content.

Do you have ads integrated with your site out of curiosity? Just wondering what kind of revenue can be generated by a smaller site such as yours that is built well and generating views.

I use Google ads but I have to say I don’t generate a huge amount of revenue through them. The revenue is dependent on the content (sports content wouldn’t generate as much as say financial blogs) and the part of the world the views are generated from. Being a cricket focused site, a large part of my audience comes the subcontinent. You ideally want to be hitting Western Europe and North American markets.

However, I’ve found that affiliate links particularly to sports betting sites are a good way to generate income and more in keeping with the audiences you are likely to attract to a sports site. Essentially you take a % of the site’s profit for anyone who signs up via the ads on your site

Starting to talk about it is a step towards renewal, by putting together more ideas you can do great things!

the sports community is important because sport fascinates many people and unites.

As far as I can always willing to offer my hand!

Change has to start somewhere and i think that most of the community are looking for some sort of change.

It still wont happen without people willing to step up and do the work but things like this can generate ideas.

Appreciate the offer of help. Spots is huge and should be thriving.

I agree that the sports community is important and should be more thriving.

However, I confess that in recent days I have noticed a total slowdown, all communities have less content.

I don't understand why.

0E-8 BEE

I feel actifit posts are unfair to hive economy, where they get like 30 USD worth of upvote where as many writers who write long form content get like what, 10 cent? Feels unfair to even get actifit posts that much support.

0.00436743 BEE

I don't mind the posts themselves but not a fan of them as full content.

A lot of people get autovotes so this can lead to big payouts for spammy actifit content.

If they came out like threads or like reverio content without showing on your main feed it would be grand.

Great move. I wish I had started my programming training. I still gotta do it.

I would gladly give my massive supports in things I can do if this gets the community's nod.

At this rate we'll have to build it ourselves. I really wish I could program, to build some of these things that i can picture in my head.

Definitely revamp !!

0E-8 BEE

Yeah good point, rather than force change. Just make a new one without the hassle. I'd be up for that. At moment sports is as good as dead and nothing happening.

0E-8 BEE

Just chip in a few grand each. We'll hire some student develops. Blackmail Khal for some source code and build a multi million site over the next few years.

Think the42.ie but with good authors, a monetized comments section and low censorship barrier.

We'll all be millionaires by 2025....

I'd laugh if I didn't think that was highly possible.

Thanks for mentioning my name, but my goal would be just to try to make a topic that attracts so many people and that people talk about everywhere grow and reach its potential, something that doesn't happen today.

As we said, I came to think about creating something new from scratch, but as we said, this has a lot of associated costs and I currently don't have such an amount available to be able to invest in a project like this, even if I think that in the future it easily has enormous potential.

I was just steering people to the conversation to add their thoughts. The more people that get involved the better and your post was the start of that conversation.

I would think that the costs are manageable and could be recovered over time if a new site was put together the right way. It would take a team of people and the money but could be done.

That's a different conversation though.

For now it's just about seeing what people are thinking and if there is any way to recover the sportstalk tribe before even thinking about it properly.

People want a sports community. It has huge potential for growth and a good place for people to spend time.

Unfortanelly my post dont reached too much People.
Maybe some People that have SPORTS dont What to know about the community.

Of course the costs are manageable if we have a vety good team everything it is possible.

I still to believe a sports community can be huge and have an insane potential.

"Sports" isn't a community.

Supporters of teams - and to a lesser sense entire leagues - are communities.

Just gotta build a tokenised version of SB Nation on Hive.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

0E-8 BEE

That's a fair point. It's very hard to capture such a broad audience on a topic like sports.

Much easier to target a specific section of sports as a community than just sports lovers.

I'm a big gaa and rugby fan but have no interest in hockey or tennis.

Unless the site was properly formatted to sub divide into communities in a way that worked.
Either that or keep it focused on one section and if that was successful launch mirrored sites over time.

I haven't visited their front-end much but I think there have been some slow changes. They did change over to the outposts but I do agree that it is kind of lacking. There was probably a lot of room to promote their front-end during the World Cup but I don't think there were many incentives in regards to that.

actually, there was a time Sports was leading the likes of LEO, NEOXIAN and the likes then

0E-8 BEE

I've been there since day one as well and thought it had great potential at the very start.

The big difference for me is that since then Leo has added features and developed their site.

Sports has stalled and let that potential slip. It could have been built on over the past couple of years and created a good user experience and added revenue streams to support its growth. It never has.
