3Speak Issues Continue

3Speak Issues Continue

Since October, 3Speak the decentralized video sharing platform powered by Hive Engine, has been grappling with significant technical challenges that have disrupted its services and left its loyal user base frustrated.

The downtime has particularly impacted communities relying heavily on 3Speak for content sharing, including InLeo Shorts and other Hive based initiatives, highlighting the platform's central role in supporting decentralized video content creation on web 3.0.

Current Issues

The trouble began in early October, when an unexpected database failure and server corruption took down a critical machine on the 3Speak platform. This technical hiccup cascaded into a larger issue, disabling the IPFS storage system cluster that powers video uploads. While the platform assured users that existing videos and data remain intact, the inability to upload new content has caused a significant bottleneck for creators and communities.

In an official update 3Speak acknowledged the gravity of the situation:

"We experienced an unavoidable database failure and server corruption, which caused one of our machines to affect the entire 3Speak platform, leading to major disruptions on the site."

This problem not only halted new video uploads but also impacted community engagement and growth, as creators and viewers alike found themselves unable to share and access fresh content.

Decentralised Storage Issues emerge

While the database issue has since been resolved 3Speak continues to face hurdles with its video upload capabilities. The platform had the option to revert temporarily to a centralized storage solution like Amazon S3 to restore functionality. However, in line with its decentralized ethos 3Speak chose to move forward with a more ambitious solution: leveraging the SPK Network nodes which was launched previously and all Hive users were airdropped tokens in order to maintain its commitment to a decentralized video storage ecosystem.

This decision is inline with 3Speak’s long term vision but has also prolonged the upload outage as there are limited people supporting the SPK Network. The team has promised that once the SPK Network node integration is complete users can expect a more reliable and scalable system that aligns with the platform’s mission.

What is SPK Network?

The SPK Network is a decentralized social media protocol and incentivization layer designed to challenge the dominance of Web2 big tech platforms. These centralized giants often control online expression by monopolizing the infrastructure behind digital accounts. They have the power to censor or deactivate accounts, sell user-generated data and monetize content without sharing revenue with creators.

SPK Network seeks to shift control back to individuals. By using peer to peer node systems, it empowers users and independent organizations to manage their digital infrastructure. This approach enables communities to self host their content, eliminating reliance on centralized platforms.

SPK Network operates using a decentralized ecosystem that includes governance and utility tokens such as SPK, BROCA, and LARYNX. These tokens reward infrastructure providers and users, creating an incentivized ecosystem for Web3 applications. Nodes handle storage, encoding, content delivery, and transaction validation, ensuring that the network remains censorship resistant and robust.

SPK Network embodies the principles of Web3: decentralization, autonomy and user ownership. It provides solutions that allow users to own their social media accounts, content and online identities without fear of censorship or exploitation by centralized authorities.

For 3Speak, integrating SPK Network means transitioning to a resilient decentralized storage solution that aligns with its mission to empower creators. The SPK Network allows users to support the ecosystem by providing storage via IPFS nodes, running encoding services or hosting Content Delivery Network (CDN) gateways. In return these contributors earn rewards through SPK governance tokens or utility tokens like BROCA.

Community Frustrations With Lack of Updates

For many in the Hive ecosystem the downtime has been more than an inconvenience. Creators reliant on 3Speak for showcasing their work have found themselves at a standstill. Communities like InLeo Shorts which focus on quick, engaging video content have been hit particularly hard.

The lack of consistent updates during the early days of the outage compounded user frustration. While 3Speak has since apologized for the initial communication gap and pledged to keep users informed, the community's trust has been tested. Comments and posts across Discord reflect a mix of understanding and angst, with some users voicing concerns.

Crazy how it can take so long to fix something like this :D
It is properly the downside of Decentralized stuff.

It probably comes down to the lack of workers in the industry which will probably continue to increase over the next few years

I am indeed one of the Users that get frustrated. Cannot Upload any Videos since more than a month. And there is no timeline whatsoever on when this will change. Updates from the Team about Progress Are lacking. 🙁
