Guess Who Stole My Job?

I think one of the worst things we can do to ourselves as humans is to live in self-denial. It’s really sad when you see it. You know about the existence of something. You know what it is and what it can do but you choose to pretend not to know it, not to see it for reasons only you know.

Source

It's a bit like in an abusive relationship, forgive my digression. Probably you guys are courting or whatever and each time you both argue, he keeps raising his hand like he’ll hit you then he stops. Or say things like “If I slap you….” Now you realize that the only thing holding him back is that you both haven’t tied the knot yet, but once you do, those very sweet promises of his would come to reality but you decide to live in self-denial and say things like “I just got him angry. It was my fault.” Well, everyone knows that the self-denial you’re living in will cost you something. Just a matter of time.

Now that you get my concept of self-denial, I can now switch to the topic at hand. When ChatGPT came, I won’t say I knew it firsthand because I’m sure many others saw it from scratch but my cousin is a web developer/programmer. I don’t know all his titles, but he’s basically a techie. So, he told me early on about the phenomenal AI called ChatGPT.

Now, his reason for telling me this was because he knew I write and so, writing and researching just got several ways easier. And as most of the world did, I latched on to it. Eager to see just how wonderful it is.

However, I failed or just refused to see what the fuss was all about. Okay, it could research things and format your work alike, dash in some wry sense of humour here and there but what else? That was just it. In essence, I limited what ChatGPT could do because I wasn’t ready to admit just how powerful it is and how it was quickly and surely dominating the world.

So, my cousin, who’s a tech consultant for an organization said he had a job for me as an assistant. As their programmer, there was a small part of the proposal he had issued them which he stated he won’t do as it was too small for him to handle and hence just eat up his time and distract him from the main work. So, in the proposal, he requested an assistant that he would personally train to take care of that part of it.

He gushed about the job so much to me even before the proposal was accepted but by the time he told me what my salary would be just for putting in four hours on that job every day for the next two weeks, my eyes became the animated dollar sign we see in cartoons.

Safe to say that I’d already spent the whole money in my head. Dutifully allocating it to different portions of my life. So, each day, I’d call eagerly and ask if the proposal had been accepted and he’d say it was coming and I should be patient. I did that for three days and when I was just about giving up, he called that he had a meeting with the CEOs scheduled for the evening.

And so, I waited with bated breath because let’s face it, with the way I’d gotten all jittery over that job, I was ready to draw blood if it didn’t come to materialization. Just kidding….I wouldn’t. Or maybe I would. Lol.

So, the next day, as I skipped to his office, greeting everyone that I’d probably never greet, smiling and showing off my pearly whites, I wasn’t prepared for the news I got.

“Your job was given to another person I’m afraid.”

This was said by my cousin as soon as I walked into the office. I just looked at him warily because whoever that person was would have it coming. He went on to say that I wouldn’t believe the person that had the audacity and when I enquired, he said “ChatGPT.”

He saw the confusion on my face so he went on to tell me that the proposal was accepted and then later on, the same night of yesterday, he was called again and told rather excitedly that he needn’t bother about the assistant bit. That they had just imputed what they wanted into ChatGPT and it gave it to them exactly. My cousin as their programmer confirmed it himself and saw that ChatGPT had carried out my job perfectly.

As I stayed back at the office to stress eat a bit, I started thinking. People had already complained that the invention of AI and all its subsidiaries were taking over their jobs. And it suddenly sank in that I had inadvertently become one of those people whose job had been so graciously stolen by ChatGPT.

I realized how much I’d been limiting AI as a whole. Refusing to accept that part of it because you know…what you don’t know can't harm you and all that. Well, it did. Very well in fact. And while I’m incredibly wary of it now, I have reluctantly accepted that it is the new best thing and that there are so many wonders of ChatGPT that we are yet to explore.

I hope it doesn’t graciously steal any more jobs of mine because I’m this close to searching for ways to kill an AI. But till then, I’ll just begin my ChatGPT exploration. Rediscover just how wonderful it is.

Telling you it's an easy, super convenient tool is just how they hook you. They get you thinking you're AI's master, and it's only there to make your life easier and more convenient.

But why would that be? Why would Bill Gates, or the Google guy whatever his name is, or even Elon, do that? Money? They don't need it. And I hardly think these guys wake up one morning thinking expressly how they can make my life a little easier and more fun. It's naive to think that, yet so many people are buying into it.

Then, as you say there's the self-denial group. I've spoken to quite a few people in writing and programming who keep insisting 'oh no, it's just a tool to make my life easier'. Sure it is. Now. But when the AI becomes a tiny bit more advanced, these people will all be out of a job. Because why would anyone pay you to do something they themselves can get a robot to do for free?

I am so sorry for the situation. Genuinely. It happened to my mom recently, too, and I know how much it sucks. I'm thankful there are still places like Hive, where you can get rewarded for writing intelligent, original content. So there is, at least, that.

There's that at least. For us at Hive where we know that originality and effort pays off, we don't need to worry. And you're right, it's naive to think that the big guys wake up or constantly think of how to make life easier. Even I know, that they aren't that charitable.

I heard about 9,000 Facebook workers were laid off because of this yet we Constantly sing the praises. The most we can do however is to see how to use it to at least maximize profit for us. Somehow.

I'm sorry that happened to your mom. It's quite a devastating feeling.

Privately, I hope it's a fad, and that it'll peak, then flounder, with employers returning to human employees in time. But who knows?

Do you remember when the use of drones for video coverage came in existence, a lot of photographers and videographers who refused to admit that drones where here to stay eventually lost their jobs because they failed to upgrade themselves.

The drones can't work on their selves just like this AI of a thing. Human can't be completely taken off all job and I think discovering how to work best with AI should be our priority now

That's definitely true. Instead of being an enemy to it. Decide how best it is to use it to your advantage. I'm happy you made it here Georgie. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

writers amd artists are the last artisans to fall to mechanisation.

now an algorithm can do the job, why pay for a person?

what worries me, though, are people using such a program to write their essays to gain educational qualifications. partr of the learning process is the reproduction of the knowledge by manner of producing written work which demonstrates you understand the subject, and are able to order your thoughts and produce conclusions. people using an algorithm to create such an essay are going to be woefully unprepared for life after education

You are right. We are suddenly faced with the challenges of being ripped off completely from the use of our brains. You're trying to gain educational qualification but rely solely on an algorithm when you can just learn from it instead and put your thoughts to work.

Abuse is inevitable in any new invention. We can only hope that people can apply this algorithms to where it really matters.

It's unfortunate ChatGPT stole your job, that's a down side to it but honestly the AI has really helped a lot.

I had a thirty paged term paper due in two days and I wasn't worried because there was ChatGPT. I think that's what many people like me is failing to see, just how good it is. Good enough to replace us.

We are basically focusing on the perks but I think we one thing is for sure, chatGPT has come to stay.
We just hope it doesn't take over the world, like a zombie apocalypse.

Yeah I remember one of your fiction stories that talked about the possibly of ChatGPT taking over the world. Hopefully, it wouldn't come to that. But in the meantime, it has proven to be quite helpful and resourceful to a lot of people.

Back to the trenches then?🌚
Now that the job bit has been taken care of😂😂😂

I was never from the trenches to begin with.😌

Well , so sorry you lost your job to an AI.
Come to think of it, AI has advantages and disadvantages. ChatGPT was an advantage to the company and a disadvantage to you in this scenario.
ChatGPT is now broadly use, i even used it for my class assignment last night, lolzzz.

Lets see how we as humans can make good use of it .

I'm glad you're making use of it. Hopefully, wisely. It was a huge advantage to them because they get the work done accurately and at zero costs. There would be other opportunities though. No despair.

0E-8 BEE

Sorry about that, it was inevitable. Focus on becoming independent as a writer, offer your skills to blogging communities like Hive, build your community and thrive on your own

That's the idea. Though the job was somewhat related to my writing skills. Be that as it may, I am definitely working towards all that you mentioned. Thanks for stopping by.

0E-8 BEE

Wow, I feel sympathy towards you😂😂, the news must have been so shocking.

I can't even express my thought if AI should take over a job designated for me, police will catch everybody 😂😂😂.

Heads will roll.😂😂
I was taken aback. I don't know if I should be worried about the emergence of something like this. But we can only hope.

Looking forward to you reaching your new target @jhymi 😅

0E-8 BEE

Oh, wow. That would've been a big shock to me implying that the world has really changed. One of the drawbacks to ChatGPT in my opinion is it can become a clutch that people rely on until they forget doing things for themselves.

0E-8 BEE

Can you imagine a world where people only rely on AI? We'd end up with a society of brainless lazy people, as that's where it's heading.
Be glad you weren't drawn in there!

0E-8 BEE

I could never be. And I'm glad Hive doesn't encourage sole dependence on it too. Kind of hurts but I've come to understanding that it's only the beginning so...
