*I want to share some of the knowledge I’ve gained through my work to help others manage their finances in some way. In my day-to-day life I’m an investment advisor, and I increasingly see more people with no financial knowledge seeking advice. This is good for my job, but very bad for society.
I want to clarify that I’m referring mainly to Europe. I know that on the other side of the Atlantic financial knowledge tends to be broader (or at least that’s my view). So these Investment Pearls are primarily aimed at European citizens, although anyone can use them, of course.
Today I’d like to analyse risk. Risk is one of the factors people pay least attention to. We usually focus heavily on returns. There are different types of risk that one needs to evaluate:
Risk of loss
This can be summarised as how much of your capital you can afford to lose in the worst-case scenario.
Concentration risk
This is a risk people often confuse. You can own 20 different stocks and still not be diversified if they all belong to the same sector or the same market. You can own a property and a real-estate ETF focused on the same market.
A classic example is investing 50% of your portfolio in a global index ETF and the other 50% in an S&P 500 ETF. The reality is that the S&P 500 makes up around 70% of the global index, so you end up with more concentration than diversification.
Liquidity risk
Investing in publicly traded stocks is not the same as investing in private equity or real estate. If you need the money quickly, you may not be able to access it or you may have to pay heavy penalties.
Counterparty risk
This risk is especially present in cryptocurrencies. SWAP.HIVE is not the same as HIVE, and WBTC is not the same as Bitcoin. There is a risk that the counterparty fails to meet its obligations and the value of your assets drops to zero.
Behavioural risk
Our own behaviour is usually our greatest enemy. We must not be swayed by fads or financial gurus. We need to have a plan, analyse the investments, and execute them.
That’s all for today. I hope this has helped you improve your financial perspective a little.*
A very important topic for every investor. 💰📈 Understanding risk is just as important as looking for opportunities. Great reminder to invest wisely and stay informed. 😊✨
