Not all flowers have smell

Now is the right time to set up a garden in Tamil Nadu. This local month is celebrated as the month for sowing seeds. Some crops, if planted now, can yield a harvest in the month of January, and that's how it is being done. Some crops that are dependent on water will have enough during this part of the year because there is always rain in the next few months.

A few days back, when I was taking a look at my garden, I was able to see that many bees were roaming around, and some of those bees were very colorful to watch. I used to always wonder what made the bees and the other pollinators recognize the flowers and collect honey and pollen grains from them. Flowers emit a strong scent, and that is what attracts the pollinators. I know for a fact that not only bees or wasps, but also ants are good pollinators. In some way, this strong smell is what is attracting the pollinators.

I noticed that bees also visit the flowers that do not have any scent. That is when I realized that it is not mandatory that we smell all the flowers. There can be some flowers whose smell is not evident to humans but might be strong enough for the bees and other pollinators. Some flowers might even have a heavy smell, where the pollinators get dizzy with the smell. I got this idea because some levels of sound are not audible to human ears, but they still affect Humans. Similarly, there can be smells on all the flowers, and some of those can be sensed by human beings, and some may not be sensed.

The beauty of creation and nature is astonishing. There might soon be a study that can find a device that can measure the smell or differentiate the smell. Today, we don't have any such device that can tell us whether a smell is of Jasmine or Rosemary. This is one thing that technology has not shown any significant breakthrough in. Currently, smells can only be sensed using our human sense organs, and of course, all other living beings also have similar senses, but there is no artificial process or device, or invention to do this sensing.

oh yes, every animal can hear or smell something different than us... but ant impollinating thats new to me! bees are in danger, we should protect them and plant more flowers we can

Inventing a device that detects smells is not too hard in my opinion, but it would be very useful if invented. I agree that there are smells the human nose is incapable of perceiving but other creatures like bees and insects do.

Nature is indeed beautiful, animals and insects have very sharp sense organs, they get to sense, see and smell things we humans don't get to.

This is no doubt a complex connection between nature and our senses.

It’s fascinating how pollinators like bees perceive scents beyond our human capabilities, reminding us of the hidden complexities in the natural world.

I have never really thought about this. Thank you for making me think in this direction. It would actually be nice to see that scientists and technologists will come up with a device that can measure the smell of things.

You are right, some of them don't produce the smell that we human can sense, I also learn that there are several flower that can mimick animal especially female, and produce some hormone so that the male could come for mate, so basically the flower tricked the male insect to reproduce, so that they can be polinated.
nature is always wonderful

This is really so cool. Never thought about how bees might sense smells we can’t. Nature really is way ahead of our tech sometimes. Would love to see a device that can actually read a flower’s scent one day.

That's why we need to always appreciate the beauty of nature. It is something very beautiful

It's not only flowers that have smells some leaves can give off a strong scent. I like using creeping thyme (there are lots of types) to smother weeds on the cracks in pathways. It's low lying so when you step on it a strong thyme smell hits your nose. Of course not everyone is going to like the smell of thyme but I think it is great. For me it is very uplifting and fresh/clean giving me a similar feeling to the scent of the air after a thunderstorm.

The seeds are usually very cheap but you get a greater variety if you can find a plug seller.
