Yesterday, I was opportuned to attend a sensitization programme for the mothers in my small community. It was hosted by association of Christian mothers in my church. This programme though it was for mothers but fathers were equally invited because it will be beneficial to them as well.
In the programme mothers were taught on the various ways to take good care of themselves. Some mothers are so engrossed in taking care of every other person apart from themselves. To nurture is one of the innate festure in all mothers and they never joke with that duty. Some will still be be concerned about their children even when they are down or sick. The facilitator is a practicing doctor in one of the best hospitals in town. He encouraged mothers to adopt pro-active medication in taking good care of themselves.
He explained that proactive medication is the type of medications that you administer to yourself to boost your immune system, make you fit and keep you healthy at all times. He listed few of these medications and they are:
•Quality Sleep
•Exercising
•Eating Right
He explained how important sleep is to make human being. Sleep makes everybody to function well. Many mothers hardly sleep or even take enough rest because they are so busy working tirelessly to take care of the family and to pay bills. He went on to explain how not getting enough sleep affects the brain and makes it impossible for the body to function well. In some cases it can result to death. He advised that we should atleast sleep for 6 hours daily.
A mother stood up to ask if the 6 hours sleep is all at once or should be divided between night sleep and siesta. She also explained how busy she was during the day that she hardly find any spare time to take a rest. The doctor advised her and also put her through on how to manage her time well so that she can take care of herself.
We were also taught that to be active and healthy we should engage in physical exercise as it helpes the brain to function well, strengthens bones and muscles, help to burn excess fat and reduce the risk of disease in the body especially heart disease. One thing that is very common in most mothers is fat and this causes most of them to develop arthritis when they start approaching 50 years old. We went further to engage in aerobic exercise for about twenty minutes and it was an exciting experience for the mothers. Even the fathers enjoyed it too.
On eating right, we were taught that there are some certain food that we should eat in the barest minimum and they include sugar, salt and starch. Sugar here is the cause of diabetes in many cases that are not hereditary. He told us the story of a man in his forties that was addicted to coca-cola. He takes at least a bottle everyday and before his 45th birthday he was already down with diabetes. Starchy food are mostly carbohydrates and many processed food. Sweet and tasty as most of them are he advised us to not get addicted to them but take them in moderate quantity.
Another woman asked the doctor the right age for someone to stop taking salt. The doctor explained that eating right starts from 21 years because at that age you are already mature and no longer growing. If one that eating right on time there may be no need for any health challenges that will make one to stop eating salt completely. He stressed the importance of eating enough fruits and vegetables as it will help to nourish the body , building up immune systems that will help to fight off diseases.
We were served apple and water as the programme went on. He rounded up by telling us that we mother needs is to eat right. Many mothers are applying all sort of chemicals in the name of skincare for their skin to be beautiful and glowing. He said that we can achieve this by eating right, taking enough rest, exercising and taking enough water always.
It was a wonderful section and we all went home happy, ready to put into practice everything that have been taught to us.
