Hello, dear worldmappers! 📍 In today's post, I'm introducing you to the tranquil but breathtaking little town of Opatija in Croatia. I've had some of my best holidays there - always characterised by relaxation, the great attitude to life of the locals and the crystal-clear backdrop of the sea.
Admittedly: The rocky beaches take some getting used to - but that's what makes snorkelling all the more worthwhile. It was one of those summers that you never forget. We travelled by car from Germany via Austria (Graz) and Slovakia to Croatia - a pretty tough road trip! But before that, we treated ourselves to a detour to the antiques market in Graz - as a kind of ‘holiday perk’, haha!

The treasure hunt at the market, the lively merchant atmosphere and the sunshine were simply marvellous. The next day we continued our journey to Croatia and caught our first glimpse of the sea - still limited, but magical nonetheless. If you love the sea, you will always remember that moment when you saw it for the first time. For me, there is hardly anything like it - I have always loved the world of the sea.

Villa Maria - spotless and full of charm
Our accommodation was a dream: spotlessly clean, lovingly furnished and with a balcony that looked directly onto the sparkling water of the pool. The gentle sound of the sea woke us up in the morning and the smell of grilled fish in the evening. The pool was waiting for us at any time of day - and became the perfect place to relax in the evening with atmospheric lighting.

Lungomare - a walk through the soul of Croatia
The famous Lungomare promenade was like something out of a picture book: palm trees, Belle Époque villas, charming cafés with sea views and the majestic Kvarner Hotel, which is even said to have a crystal hall - unfortunately we didn't see it. Every step was a pleasure, a real feast for the eyes!

The Lounge Bar Tantra had its own jetty with a sandy beach - perfect for jumping straight into the water. With delicious drinks, comfortable loungers and a magnificent view, it felt like a little heaven on earth. And when the sun went down, the sky turned gold and pink - as if it were on holiday itself.
Every backdrop offered a new perspective on the vastness of the marvellous sea - and we were completely enchanted.

Fishing adventures & 🍽️ Culinary highlights
Our boys had their own fun: with line, bait and patience, they caught small fish straight from the jetty. Proud as captains, they ‘sold’ their prey to the restaurants along the promenade - for a few kuna and a big grin.
And the food? Simply heavenly: fresh fish, fragrant herbs, olive oil like liquid gold. Whether in small taverns or elegant restaurants - every bite was a poem. And a glass of Croatian white wine while the sea whispered in the background...
The chef proudly showed us his best catch of the day: a monkfish - a species of frogfish that lives at depths of 20 to over 1000 metres. This is what the sea tastes like in all its splendour! Croatian cuisine is simply delicious - every dish is an experience.

The sea - clear as crystal
The water was so clear that you could count the pebbles on the bottom. Snorkelling felt like flying through an underwater world. And if you just let yourself drift on your back, time seemed to stand still.
A booked boat tour took us to the beautiful beaches of Krk and Cres. The crew put their hearts into it - they cooked for us, lovingly looked after the children on board and paid special attention to every moment. You rarely experience so much dedication!
Every stopover on a different beach was full of pleasure and joy. White stones lined the coast and the sea sent up its scent with every breeze.

✨ Conclusion: A holiday for the heart
The intense feelings we were able to experience during this time make our holiday in Croatia one of the most beautiful ever. I can say with full conviction that I count these holidays among my most valuable.

Hallo, ihr lieben Worldmapper! 📍 In meinem heutigen Beitrag stelle ich euch das beschauliche, aber atemberaubende Örtchen Opatija in Kroatien vor. Ich durfte dort einige meiner schönsten Urlaube erleben – immer geprägt von Entspannung, dem tollen Lebensgefühl der Einheimischen und der kristallklaren Kulisse des Meeres.
Zugegeben: Die steinigen Strände sind gewöhnungsbedürftig – aber gerade deshalb lohnt sich das Schnorcheln umso mehr. Es war einer jener Sommer, die man nie vergisst. Wir sind mit dem Auto von Deutschland über Österreich (Graz) und die Slowakei nach Kroatien gefahren – ein ziemlich heftiger Roadtrip! Doch zuvor gönnten wir uns noch einen Abstecher zum Antiquitätenmarkt in Graz – quasi als „Urlaubsverdienst“, haha!

Die Schatzsuche auf dem Markt, die lebendige Händlerstimmung und der Sonnenschein waren einfach herrlich. Am nächsten Tag setzten wir unsere Reise nach Kroatien fort und erhaschten den ersten Blick aufs Meer – zwar noch eingeschränkt, aber dennoch magisch. Wer das Meer liebt, wird sich immer an diesen Moment erinnern, in dem man es zum ersten Mal sah. Für mich gibt es kaum etwas Vergleichbares – ich liebe die Welt des Meeres seit jeher.

Villa Marija – Pikobello und voller Charme
Unsere Unterkunft war ein Traum: blitzsauber, liebevoll eingerichtet und mit einem Balkon, der direkt auf das glitzernde Wasser des Pools zeigte. Morgens weckte uns das sanfte Rauschen des Meeres, das bis zur Villa hinauf klang, abends der Duft von gegrilltem Fisch. Der Pool wartete zu jeder Tageszeit auf uns – und wurde abends mit stimmungsvoller Beleuchtung zum perfekten Entspannungsort.

Lungomare – Spaziergang durch die Seele Kroatiens
Die berühmte Promenade Lungomare war wie aus einem Bilderbuch: Palmen, Belle-Époque-Villen, charmante Cafés mit Meerblick und das majestätische Kvarner Hotel, das sogar einen Kristallsaal besitzen soll – leider haben wir ihn nicht gesehen. Jeder Schritt war ein Genuss, ein echter Augenschmaus!
Die Lounge Bar Tantra hatte einen eigenen Steg mit Sandstrand – perfekt, um direkt ins Wasser zu springen. Mit leckeren Drinks, komfortablen Liegen und grandiosem Ausblick fühlte es sich wie ein kleiner Himmel auf Erden an. Und wenn die Sonne unterging, färbte sich der Himmel in Gold und Rosa – als würde er selbst Urlaub machen.
Jede Kulisse bot eine neue Perspektive auf die Weite des wundervollen Meeres – und wir waren restlos verzaubert.

Fischabenteuer & 🍽️ Kulinarische Highlights
Unsere Jungs hatten ihren eigenen Spaß: Mit Schnur, Köder und Geduld fingen sie kleine Fische direkt vom Steg. Stolz wie Kapitäne „verkauften“ sie ihre Beute an die Restaurants entlang der Promenade – für ein paar Kuna und ein breites Grinsen.
Und das Essen? Einfach himmlisch: Frischer Fisch, duftende Kräuter, Olivenöl wie flüssiges Gold. Ob in kleinen Tavernen oder eleganten Lokalen – jeder Bissen war ein Gedicht. Dazu ein Glas kroatischer Weißwein, während das Meer im Hintergrund flüsterte…
Der Chefkoch zeigte uns voller Stolz seine beste Ausbeute des Tages: ein Seeteufel – eine Anglerfischart, die in Tiefen von 20 bis über 1000 Metern lebt. So schmeckt das Meer in seiner vollen Pracht! Die kroatische Küche ist schlichtweg köstlich – jedes Gericht ein Erlebnis.

Das Meer – Klar wie ein Kristall
Das Wasser war so klar, dass man die Kiesel am Boden zählen konnte. Schnorcheln fühlte sich an wie Fliegen durch eine Unterwasserwelt. Und wenn man sich einfach auf dem Rücken treiben ließ, schien die Zeit stillzustehen.
Eine gebuchte Bootstour brachte uns zu den traumhaften Stränden von Krk und Cres. Die Crew war mit vollem Herzen dabei – kochte für uns, kümmerte sich liebevoll um die Kinder an Bord und schenkte jedem Augenblick besondere Aufmerksamkeit. So viel Hingabe erlebt man selten!
Jeder Zwischenstopp an einem anderen Strand war voller Genuss und Freude. Weiße Steine säumten die Küste, und das Meer schickte mit jeder Brise seinen Duft empor.

✨ Fazit: Ein Urlaub fürs Herz
Die intensiven Gefühle, die wir in dieser Zeit erleben durften, machen den Urlaub in Kroatien zu einem der schönsten überhaupt. Ich kann mit voller Überzeugung sagen, dass ich diese Reisen zu meinen wertvollsten zähle.
