Conociendo la villa de Épila // Getting to know the village of Épila

Hola querido hiver.

En la última semana de agosto tuvimos unos días de tiempo agradable y apropiado para salir a hacer pequeñas excursiones. Hoy te traigo el paseo que hicimos a Épila, una localidad cercana a Zaragoza que tuvo gran importancia en la época renacentista.

Épila forma parte de la comarca de Valdejalón. Es un territorio cuya actividad principal es la agrícola y ganadera. Su proximidad a la capital de Aragón facilitó la actividad industrial que ahora es casi inexistente, pero de la que se pueden observar restos de esplendores pasados.

Aparcamos el coche junto a la oficina de turismo y lo primero que atrae a nuestros ojos es el Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción. La sucesión de celosías realizadas con yeso indica que pertenece al estilo mudéjar, tan característico de Aragón.

Es curioso que tiene una doble puerta pero una de ellas está tapiada. Data de principios del siglo XVII, por lo que aunque veamos numerosas grietas o elementos con evidente deterioro, sigue ostentando con dignidad que es una muestra de la riqueza que tuvo la zona.

Otro detalle que nos llama la atención es el escudo de armas de los Condes de Aranda sostenido por un águila bicéfala. Bueno, en realidad una de las cabezas ha sucumbido al tiempo.

La alegría de ver la puerta del convento abierta me duró poco. Estaban celebrando un rosario, por lo que solamente tomé unas fotos desde la entrada para no molestar. El interior era bastante sencillo y lo que más me gustó fueron las pinturas al fresco que decoran las bóvedas.

Al salir del convento nos queda a la izquierda la parte trasera de la Casa-Palacio de los Condes de Aranda, decorada también con celosías de yeso y con llamativas rejas de forja en algunas ventanas. Los condes tenían un pasadizo privado para acceder a la iglesia del convento sin necesidad de pisar la calle, cosas de condes. Nosotros lo atravesamos por debajo y subimos unas escaleras para acceder a la fachada del palacio. Desde arriba se observan mejor las celosías, me encantan los diseños en forma de mandalas.

Rodeamos la casa-palacio para contemplar su fachada. Es más sencilla de lo que esperaba, siendo lo más destacable la placa que conmemora el segundo centenario de la muerte del Conde de Aranda, realizada en cerámica de Muel.

Si nos damos la vuelta, sin movernos del sitio, frente a nosotros se despliega una escalinata que nos lleva al templo Santa María la Mayor, iglesia principal de la villa. Tiene un siglo más que el convento y se aprecia con claridad la diferencia de estilo, en este caso barroco-clasicista.

Gracias a un panel informativo conocemos mejor el entorno y podemos identificar los puntos de interés que quedan al alcance de la vista en días despejados.

Como tanto la casa-palacio como la iglesia estaban cerrados, me dediqué a fotografiar más detalles del exterior.

Teníamos en mente curiosear un poco más la zona desde el coche, preparando nuevas excursiones que pronto compartiré, así que si te ha gustado permanece atento.

Hi, dear hiver.

During the last week of August, we had a few days of pleasant weather, perfect for going on short trips. Today, I'm going to tell you about the trip we took to Épila, a town near Zaragoza that was very important during the Renaissance.

Épila is part of the Valdejalón region. It is an area whose main activity is agriculture and livestock farming. Its proximity to the capital of Aragon facilitated industrial activity, which is now almost non-existent, but traces of its past splendour can still be seen.

We park the car next to the tourist office and the first thing that catches our eye is the Convent of the Immaculate Conception. The succession of plaster latticework indicates that it belongs to the Mudejar style, so characteristic of Aragon.

It is curious that it has a double door, but one of them is bricked up. It dates from the early 17th century, so although we can see numerous cracks and elements of obvious deterioration, it still stands with dignity as a testament to the wealth that the area once enjoyed.

Another detail that catches our attention is the coat of arms of the Counts of Aranda held by a double-headed eagle. Well, actually, one of the heads has succumbed to the passage of time.

My joy at seeing the convent door open was short-lived. They were celebrating a rosary, so I just took a few photos from the entrance so as not to disturb them. The interior was quite simple, and what I liked most were the fresco paintings decorating the vaults.

As we leave the convent, we see the rear of the Casa-Palacio de los Condes de Aranda (House-Palace of the Counts of Aranda) on our left, also decorated with plaster latticework and striking wrought iron grilles on some of the windows. The counts had a private passageway to access the convent church without having to step onto the street, as counts do. We crossed underneath it and climbed some stairs to reach the palace façade. The latticework is better seen from above; I love the mandala-shaped designs.

We walked around the palace to admire its façade. It is simpler than I expected, the most notable feature being the plaque commemorating the bicentenary of the death of the Count of Aranda, made of Muel ceramic.

If we turn around, without moving from the spot, we see a staircase in front of us that leads to the Santa María la Mayor temple, the town's main church. It is a century older than the convent and the difference in style, in this case Baroque-Classical, is clearly visible.

Thanks to an information panel, we can learn more about the area and identify points of interest that are visible on clear days.

As both the palace and the church were closed, I devoted myself to photographing more details of the exterior.

We had in mind to explore the area a little more from the car, preparing new excursions that I will soon share, so if you liked it, stay tuned.
