U-Pick Apples in Julian, CA [EN/PT-BR]

Summer is finally over, and it's time for apple picking. Usually in the beginning of fall, around September, starts the apple picking season in Julian, CA. I've talked about Julian a few times before, it's a small town in the Cuyamaca Mountains, with lots of activities and just about an hour driving from San Diego. The town is famous for having a lot of apple orchards, and only one month during fall, they have apple picking open for visitors. This year it started in the second week of September. This is a fun activity to do with kids, and if we have a chance, we always try to go. This year we chose to go to Volcan Valley Apple Farm.

O verão finalmente acabou e é hora de colher maçãs. Normalmente, no início do outono, por volta de setembro, começa a temporada de colheita de maçãs em Julian, CA. Já falei sobre Julian algumas vezes antes, é uma cidade pequena nas montanhas Cuyamaca, com muitas atividades e é só a mais ou menos uma hora de distancia de San Diego. A cidade é famosa por ter muitos pomares de maçã e, somente em um mês durante o outono, a colheita de maçã está aberta aos visitantes. Este ano, a colheita começou na segunda semana de setembro. Esta é uma atividade legal para fazer com crianças, e quando temos uma chance, a gente sempre tenta ir. Este ano, optamos por ir à Volcan Valley Apple Farm.

The cost to get in is U$5 per person, and each back for apples is U$15. As you can see there are many rows with different kinds of apples. I think there are 6 or 7 different kinds at this orchard. To be honest, I don't know much about apples, so we just started walking, and picked apples of 3 different kinds.

O custo para entrar é de US$ 5 por pessoa, e cada sacola de maçãs custa US$ 15. Como você pode ver, há muitas fileiras com diferentes tipos de maçãs. Acho que há 6 ou 7 tipos diferentes nesse pomar. Para ser sincero, não entendo muito de maçãs, então começamos a caminhar e colhemos maçãs de três tipos diferentes.

As you can see, I had to try one on the spot. Isn't it cool to eat a fruit that you just picked from the tree?
When they are still on the tree, they are covered with a little bit of dust, and they look dull. But once you clean them, they look shiny and beutiful. They also taste super good!!
We filled our bag pretty quick, it wasn't hard to find good ones, there were a lot of apples to pick.
Outside there was a lemonade stand, and a roasted corn stand. Across the street, the orchard also has a winery with a tasting room.

Como você pode ver, tive que experimentar uma na hora. Não é legal comer uma fruta que você acabou de colher da árvore?
As maçãs quando ainda estão na árvore, ficam cobertas com um pouco de poeira e parecem sem graça, meio foscas. Mas depois que você limpa, elas ficam brilhantes e lindas. Elas também são deliciosas!
Enchemos nossa sacola bem rápido, não foi difícil encontrar maçãs boas, pois havia muitas maçãs para colher.
Do lado de fora, havia uma barraca de limonada e uma barraca de milho assado. Do outro lado da rua, o pomar também tem uma vinícola com uma sala de degustação.

When we left the orchard, we decided to go taste some apple cider. We had been to Calico Cidery before and we knew they had some good cider, so we just went there. This Cidery also has a small orchard and apple picking, we thought they wouldn't have apple picking this year (at least what I heard), but when we got there there was a sign that they were open for picking just today. Anyways, we were there for the cider, so I ordered a sampler with all four kinds they had available today.
The tasting room has a great atmosphere, with benches, sofas and tables. So we just chose a place to sit and enjoyed our cider.

Quando saímos do pomar, decidimos provar uma cidra de maçã. Já tínhamos ido à Calico Cidery antes e sabíamos que eles tinham uma boa cidra, então fomos até lá. Pensamos que não haveria colheita de maçãs este ano (pelo menos foi o que ouvi), mas quando chegamos lá havia uma placa informando que a colheita estava aberta apenas hoje. De qualquer forma, estávamos lá por causa da sidra, então pedi uma amostra com todos os quatro tipos que estavam disponíveis hoje.
A sala de degustação tem um ótimo ambiente, com bancos, sofás e mesas. Assim, escolhemos um lugar para sentar e apreciamos nossa sidra.

To finish the day, we decided to stop and get an apple pie before driving back down to San Diego. The shops in town were extremely crowded, with super long lines. During the apple picking season the town receives a lot of visitors during the weekends. There are some other apple pie shops right outside town, and we decided to try one of them on our way. The line was also big, I waited for about 45 minutes. We chose to get a pie at Moms Pie House.

Para terminar o dia, decidimos parar e comprar uma torta de maçã antes de voltarmos para San Diego. As lojas da cidade estavam extremamente lotadas, com filas muito longas. Durante a temporada de colheita de maçãs, a cidade recebe muitos visitantes nos finais de semana. Há outras lojas de torta de maçã nos arredores da cidade, e decidimos experimentar uma delas no caminho. A fila também era grande, fiquei esperando por cerca de 45 minutos. Optamos por comprar uma torta na Moms Pie House.

When we got home, we had to try the pie. Check it out! This time I decided to order an Apple Berry Pie, instead of the tradicional one. It has apples, blueberries and raspberries. And also check out the apples after they got washed.
