Echoes of Myth, Wonders of Nature: Tawi Atair Sinkhole in Salalah, Oman

sink.png

The sinkhole’s name, β€œTawi Atair,” translates to β€œWell of Birds” in Arabic, a fitting moniker given the abundance of avian life that calls this natural formation home. The sinkhole is a massive depression in the earth’s surface, formed over millions of years through the gradual dissolution of limestone bedrock. Its impressive dimensions are a testament to the power of nature’s slow but relentless forces. Measuring approximately 211 meters in diameter and plunging to a depth of around 211 meters, the Tawi Atair Sinkhole is a sight to behold. Its sheer size is awe-inspiring, leaving visitors in wonder at the forces of nature that shaped this remarkable feature. The walls of the sinkhole are nearly vertical, creating a dramatic and imposing presence that commands attention and respect. https://salalahsafari.com/tawi-atair-sinkhole/

Our journey through Salalah had already been full of surprises, but our guide told us another wonder just minutes away from where we had lunch. So the elation didn’t take long to build. I look the desert disappear into greenery, as though nature was performing an awesome trick. The scenery outside the window switched from golden sand to rolling hills covered in lively green. I couldn’t resist taking photos along the way, of the lush scenery.

When we arrived, our guide revealed that this stop wasn’t even part of the official itinerary. Because it was so close, they wanted us to experience it anyway. With a smile, he explained, this is a sinkhole. He went on to disclose how, for centuries, this place was a mystery to many. Suppressed within the Dhofar mountains. It was once reckoned to have been generated by a meteorite sock from the heavens. The mix of superstition and science added an extra layer of fascination. It makes us eager to see it for ourselves. We had only twenty minutes to wander. So my husband and I hurried toward the viewpoint. The path began with a gentle uphill climb before curving downhill. Greenery surrounded us, and I was too busy chatting and looking around to notice the trail beneath my feet. I stepped on animal droppings and almost lost my balance. My husband laughed so hard, teasing me for being too talkative to watch my step. Luckily he had water with him, and I was able to clean my slippers before continuing.

When we reached the viewpoint we realized how privileged we were to arrive ahead of the crowd. At first peek the sinkhole was hard to distinguish. Big rock formations were covered with green growth. The roots of old trees had pierced deep into the cracks. It was widening them over time as if nature itself was sculpting the place into a gem. I was too small to catch a peep of the bottom, so I asked my husband to find a better angle. Yet even with his efforts, the depth remained concealed, adding to its mystery. Instead of disappointment, we felt even more amazed. There was something eloquent about standing before a wonder we could not fully see. As though nature was keeping its secrets unseen. The quietness around us filled us with awe. We felt honored and keenly connected to the beauty of the place.

As we walked around my eyes were drawn to an old tree with a thick, textured trunk. One of its branches hangs a tattered cloth. It's like a hammock or swing. It added a jolly charm to the scene. The tree itself had a playful spirit. It quietly invites wanderers to pause and jolt. It was allured by the silent presence of this loyal guardian over the lush hidden wilderness.
The serenity of Tawi Atair was immense. Whether born from mystery, myth or simple geology the Tawi Atair Sinkhole is a marvel. Our guide explained that the sinkhole is the result of natural processes acidic water dissolving limestone over thousands of years. Science explained it but the sense of wonder stayed.
When it was time to leave I felt thankful. Tawi Atair wasn’t part of the plan, but it left an etch on me. In the heart of the desert, this hidden green marvel reminded me that nature always has surprises waiting.

I was amazed how the rock formation form naturally, mostly I heard that most of the rock formation is being done by our ancestors but this time it naturally process due to acidic water that desolves the rock formation.

Thank you @gretelarmfeg 😊

A hidden gem and a paradise. I love the path and the things you passed by. The rock formation is sublime and mind-blowing. But what hooked me the most is the that old tree you shared. The branches stretch out as is it is history and I can feel the decades of life that tree have witnessed. It must be so surreal to see this tree and I believe there is magic in there. I mean...something wonderful in "there".
