Where exactly I’m headed remains a mystery for now… but I can say this much:
My journey begins at BER – Berlin Brandenburg Airport.

✈️ BER – A Tale of Delays and Embarrassment

If you’ve heard of BER outside of Germany, it’s probably not because of how great the airport is – but rather because of how long it took to open.

Construction started in 2006, and the airport was supposed to open in 2011.
Instead, the project became a global laughingstock: design flaws, mismanagement, corruption scandals, and a fire safety system that never worked caused the opening to be delayed again and again.

In total, BER opened nine years late, in October 2020, during the height of the pandemic – and cost more than €7 billion.
International media called it a “disaster”, “a monument to German inefficiency”, and even joked it would never open at all.

But now? It’s running.
And while it’s not spectacular, there’s one place I always look forward to:

📚 Pocket Shop – Bookworm Paradise at the Airport

One of my favorite stops at BER is the Pocket Shop – a cozy little bookstore airside in Terminal 1, near Gate B.

📍 It’s part of a Swedish bookshop chain that was founded in 1989 and focuses on reading material for travelers.
The BER location opened in 2020, along with the airport, and is usually open daily from around 6 AM to 9 PM, depending on flight traffic.

What I absolutely love is the shelf of English-language non-fiction:
From memoirs and cultural essays to science and politics – there’s always something unexpected to discover.

This time, I walked away with four books – enough to keep me company on flights, beaches, and maybe the occasional rainy day.

Wohin genau, verrate ich euch später… ein bisschen Spannung darf sein 😉
Aber fest steht: Der Flieger startet ab BER, dem Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg.

✈️ BER – ein Flughafen mit Geschichte und Pannen

Wenn ihr außerhalb Deutschlands lebt, habt ihr vom BER-Flughafen vielleicht schon gehört – aber vermutlich nicht wegen seiner Schönheit oder Effizienz.
Vielmehr wurde der Flughafen über viele Jahre hinweg zu einem internationalen Running Gag.

Der Bau begann 2006, die Eröffnung war ursprünglich für 2011 geplant.
Doch es kam anders: Pfusch am Bau, fehlerhafte Brandschutzsysteme, Planungschaos und politische Fehlentscheidungen sorgten dafür, dass der Flughafen ganze neun Jahre verspätet eröffnete – erst im Oktober 2020, mitten in der Pandemie.

Er kostete am Ende über 7 Milliarden Euro (ursprünglich geplant: 2 Milliarden) und wurde weltweit zum Symbol für das Scheitern deutscher Ingenieurskunst. CNN, BBC & Co. berichteten regelmäßig – oft mit einem Augenzwinkern.

Aber gut – jetzt funktioniert er endlich. Und auch wenn er nicht spektakulär ist, gibt es einen Ort, der mir jedes Mal die Wartezeit versüßt:

📚 Pocket Shop – Bücherliebe am Flughafen

Wer mich kennt, weiß: Bücher gehen immer!
Und so ist einer meiner liebsten Stopps am BER der Pocket Shop, ein gemütlicher Flughafenbuchladen direkt hinter der Sicherheitskontrolle in Terminal 1 (Bereich B).

📍 Der Pocket Shop ist Teil einer schwedischen Buchhandelskette, die 1989 in Stockholm gegründet wurde und sich auf Reiselektüre spezialisiert hat.
Die Filiale am BER wurde zur Eröffnung des Flughafens 2020 eröffnet und ist täglich von etwa 6:00 bis 21:00 Uhr geöffnet – je nach Flugplan.

Was mich dort immer wieder begeistert: das Regal mit englischsprachigen Non-Fiction-Titeln.
Ob Biografien, Gesellschaft, Wissenschaft oder Philosophie – hier finde ich fast immer ein Buch, das ich vorher noch nicht kannte.

Diesmal sind es sogar vier Bücher geworden – genug Lesestoff für Strand, Flugzeug und vielleicht auch mal einen regnerischen Nachmittag.
