Exploring India: A Journey Through My First Experience in 2024

My husband’s ancestors hail from India, with his grandparents having made the journey to Malaysia during the British colonial era to work. They remained in Malaysia until the country gained its independence in 1957. Over the years, despite being far from their homeland, my husband's family maintained strong ties with their relatives in India. Every year, his grandparents and parents would visit their extended family in India, not only to reconnect but also to explore the sights and beauty the country had to offer. Last year marked my first trip to India, and my husband joined me on this exciting journey. We were both eager to see the places his family had spoken so fondly of. The trip was filled with wonderful moments, and we were struck by the strong family bonds and the warmth of the people we met. We also marveled at the incredible beauty of the landscapes and the cultural richness that India has to offer.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the northern region of Kashmir. This was a special experience for me, as it was my first time encountering a place covered in snow and ice. The weather was extremely cold, and while the locals wore just two layers of clothing, I found myself bundled up in three or four layers to stay warm. Despite the cold, Kashmir was incredibly beautiful, and its serene, snow-capped mountains and picturesque views left a lasting impression. However, I realized that staying in such a cold climate for an extended period might not be something I could handle.

After our time in Kashmir, we travelled to one of India’s most famous landmarks—the Taj Mahal. It took us about 18 hours and 40 minutes to reach Agra, where the monument is located. The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum situated on the south bank of the Yamuna River in Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during childbirth. The monument's stunning architecture and intricate details are a testament to the emperor’s deep love for his wife. The place was crowded with visitors, but the sheer beauty of the Taj Mahal made it a truly unforgettable experience. This trip to India was not only a journey through beautiful landscapes and historical landmarks but also an opportunity to strengthen family connections and immerse ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of my husband's roots.
