Today's post is a little different to what I usually share. It's actually a website! And it's been quite a while, probably years, since the last time I stumbled upon something so interesting and immersive.
In a way, it's a catalogue. A catalogue of human legacy!
The website is a byproduct of a decade-long construction of a metro line through a riverbed in the city of Amsterdam.
During the development the archaeologists unearthed and described approximately 700,000 items dating from 2005 all the way back to 3000 BC.
And they painstakingly photographed and presented 12,000 of these pieces in a website called Below the Surface by date of creation.
All you have to do is scroll down and down and down. It's just so fascinating how it all starts with regular everyday items all of us can identify. Coins, phones, toys, credit cards etc..
Just a tiny sample of the treasures featured in the Below the Surface project!
And then, as the items get older and older they become less and less identifiable. But worry not, you can click every piece you are curious about to get a short description about its origin and usecase.
Embark on a remarkable and unique journey to the past.

Just randomly clicked on the lower jawbone of an ape from 1300! This is the kind of site I can get lost in. Will make for some interesting late night reading.
Thank you!
Yeah, I am returning to it every day so much interesting stuff to check out. It will take days if not weeks to get over it 😂
I saw a documentary on the process during the excavation, some of the stuff is amazing that they found. I'm going to go check it out. The older stuff has to be really cool!

that's an interesting idea, i gave a look and could be considered a sort of online museum
I like such ancient and mysterious items. Do we know where they came from?
I can’t believe they actually cataloged everything and sifted through it all to find all that stuff.
So many coins and collectible items in there. It will take time to click em all

It's an interesting site and it's weird to see all the stuff they dig up. Who knows if it will be a historical piece centuries down the line.
it's always fascinating to feast eyes on old time items. I am always curious too, it is a way to learn from history and also predict some possible future outcomes
