This is something fascinating I stumbled upon today.
So, the tldr is that researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) have developed a fascinating tool to check if milk has gone bad. And all you need to have is a smart phone.
Before I read the actual press release my first guess was that it would use some advanced camera hocus pocus or something that would recognize discoloration or whatever that the human eye can't... see...
But here's the even more fascinating and ingenious part.
The testing can be done without opening the container...wtf? How would that even work!
So here's the quick gist.
The concept works by having the phone to send vibrations through the milk container. Then the data are collected and with a bit of machine learning magic it determines the milk’s pH levels, hence its freshness or spoilage.
The researchers claim their method is highly reliable, super cheap and as aforementioned...totally non invasive.
practical and efficient solution to this problem is proposed in this paper: a vibration-based milk spoilage detection method called VibMilk that utilizes the ubiquitous vibration motor and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) of off-the-shelf smartphones. The method detects spoilage based on the fact that the milk’s physical properties change, inducing different vibration responses at various stages of degradation.
According to the published paper, VibMilk achieves 98.35% accuracy in detecting milk spoilage across 23 different stages, from fresh (pH = 6.6) to fully spoiled (pH = 4.4). Not bad!
At the moment the researchers are working to make the app more efficient with different packaging materials.
Theoretically, this technical could have environmental, economic, and social implications.
Will it see mainstream adoption thought? Dunno, time will tell I guess. I certainly don't see my self using it every time I go to shop some milk. Maybe I would do it a couple of times for the novelty but that's it. Call me lazy 🙃😜😄
Still, it shows all the tricks our smartphones can pull with a bit of ingenuity! Sky is literally the meaning 😄
Here's a link to paper if you want a thorough read on Vibmilk and here's a link to the dumbed down press release.
Enjoy!

I don't know man. My nose is free to me, attached, and with one whiff it can tell me instantly if the milk is bad or good.
Hahahaha. Yeah I agree but imo I still am amazed with the whole vibration tech they came up with!
It is some cool tech!
That is an interesting tool, but I don't think many of us would probably buy one (unless its dirt cheap). It makes me wonder what would happen if you used it in a supermarket and checked their milk.
Well all you need is a phone which you probably already have. As for the software, dunno if they plan it to be free or not 💰
If it does work, that'll be nice.
Maybe next they'll be able to check for eggs.
I wouldn't have to be guessing if the discoloration after I crack open an egg isn't going bad or if the chick that would have been born would have been a negro😂😂😂
Coming up next, cooking the eggs with the phone 🙃
What would be its purpose? Its an interesting app and perhaps good in other nations but for many of us things are stamped and dated. I do the ol pour it and if it isn't clumpy she's good to go.
Yeah it's a bit useless but still the tech is imo fascinating

Pimping mah Re
I only trust my nose haha but thats nice a ph detector with phone 🤨
!DUO
And it uses the vibrator. Lol

If a person can't tell milk's gone bad with their own senses why even keep breathing lololol we're ruined ☠️
Kids these days and their technology. SMH.
!pimp
Yeah I agree but it's really cool how it works!
Sounds !PIMP to me!
!pimp
If it really works, would be useful, a lot of times I open milk and then next days just sniff to check if it's good or not, but it's kinda random...
Yeah I don't see it getting adoption but it's an ingenious tech nonetheless

That's a cool new app! No longer do you have to trust the best buy sale date! Very interesting science behind it though, those guys are pretty damn creative to figure that one out!
!DUO
Interesting if I actually drank milk. Yuck
!pimp
Next there will be an app to replace your brain... that's the end goal.
How much funding did UNSW burn developing this useless app?
All this says is don't trust your natural born senses and once again let Big Brother tell you what is good for you.
Australia has become so dystopian.
That's an amazing tool. But even when you smell the milk and if the odor is foul then its bad. 😁
