I was enjoying a cold coffee in my garden today when I noticed a new friend I had never seen before!
Can't spot it? Let me zoom a bit for you!
These are the three best photos I managed to take. Unfortunately the little fella just wouldn't stay still!
As I said before, this was a bee I had never seen before. Naturally, I had to find the exact species, wouldn't be hard with that distinctive yellow spot.
And sure enough, after some googling I believe this was an individual of the species Xylocopa pubescens, which is a species of large carpenter bee. Please no pubes jokes for my little friend! That's so immature!
Xylocopa pubescens is a species of large carpenter bee. Females form nests by excavation with their mandibles, often in dead or soft wood. X. pubescens is commonly found in areas extending from India to Northeast and West Africa. It must reside in these warm climates because it requires a minimum ambient temperature of 18 °C (64 °F) in order to forage source
As for the scientific name of the species stands for "wood chopper covered with hairs".
Dunno for how long I will be seeing my beautiful buddy and his friends. They like warn weather and lately it's been getting cooler and cooler.
Ok friends, this is it for today!
I'll close this post with some videos that show better this black & yellow beauty

Your first one, congrats!
Bee is probably a sign your island is going to sink soon :(
Have a !PIMP day :D
About time!
Bee's can be however cute they want, I still prefer to distance myself from them.
If it's got a stinger, Imma wing it
Heh. Bees are cool fren, they won't bug you unless you bug em first!
That’s cool
They come in different colors, I've seen some that are completely black and some that are dark blue and indigo, and one of them stung me three times when I was running along the embankment for ice cream and it was flying towards me :) !VSC
Three times? Those ones don't die after the first?
After the carpenter hit me in the chest, I counted three large blisters from the fact that he stung me, as for the sting, these bees, I don't know anything yet, maybe they have it like wasps without serrations. !ALIVE

That is a very cool looking bee! I wonder how a queen made her way there? It may be an invasive species but if they can't tolerate the cold of Greece they won't be for very long.
Nice find in your garden!

Not a queen, just a regular pleb worker
It must have come from somewhere. Bees don't live long without a hive or queen.

It's interesting to see new bees. I generally don't pay attention to them and I don't mind bees so much. So long as you aren't touching whatever they are aiming for. It can be annoying if you are trying to do some gardening.
Thanks for the #brainupdate friend. Don't think I've seen a bee with such long wings before
