From Childhood Friends to Forever: A Heartfelt Pamamanhikan Story in Our Family

One of the most beautiful traditions in Filipino culture before a wedding is the pamamanhikan. It is more than just a formal visit between two families, it is a meaningful gathering where both sides meet, talk about the couple’s plans, and show respect for each other before marriage. It is a way of uniting not only the bride and groom, but also the families who will become part of each other’s lives.

I had the chance to witness this special tradition in a very personal way because my brother had his pamamanhikan with his girlfriend who also happens to be our neighbor and my childhood friend. Honestly, I never expected that the two of them would end up together. Life really has a funny and beautiful way of surprising us.

My brother is the silent type, while his fiancée is someone very close to my heart, my first close friend since childhood. Seeing them now, both of legal age and ready to settle down, made me realize how fast time flies. I really made sure to come home for this event, not only to witness it, but also to help in any way I could and share in their joy.

Our preparation was very simple, but it was filled with love. Since my father has many ducks and chickens, we just prepared food at home by grilling and cooking what we had. I also brought hito fish as an extra dish and made it even more special dish, especially after the pamamanhikan the boys drinks their favorite Tanduay and this dish becomes their favorite pulutan.

The pamamanhikan went well, and my heart was full seeing both families gathered in one place. What touched me the most was the heartfelt advice from the bride-to-be’s mother. She said that marriage is hard, and it is not like hot rice that you can simply spit out when it burns your mouth, nor like clothes that you can easily replace when you no longer want them. Her words were simple, but they carried so much truth.

That is why both families agreed on having a simple wedding and, instead of spending too much on one day, to give more support to the couple as they begin their married life. I truly admire that practical mindset. Weddings last only a day, but marriage is for a lifetime.

As I look at my brother and my childhood friend stepping into this new chapter, my heart is full of happiness and prayers for them. I know their journey will not always be easy, but I pray they will always choose love, patience, understanding, and faith in each other.

Wow, it's so nice to see that Pamamanhikan is still a strong tradition in your family! 💕 One of my brothers did the same when he married his wife.
