An Ethereal Butterfly

Recently, my mom has been collecting and requesting some artwork from me. She wanted to fill part of the wall above her desk with them. I mostly draw anime fan art or other random things. However, this time, she requested I make a butterfly.

I've made some butterfly artwork before, and it was fun, especially when I played with their colors. However, I wanted to play not only with colors but also with shapes. And so, I call this piece An Ethereal Butterfly.




I used acrylic and metallic markers on a 10 x 15cm watercolor paper for this artwork. Now, allow me to share some of the progress shots.





After preparing the paper, I sketched the butterfly using a 0.5 mechanical pencil. I did the wings freely but tried to make them as symmetrical as possible.

I did the line art using a dark blue and light blue gel pen.

I originally wanted to use watercolor pencils for this, but I didn't have enough time as I did this artwork during my break time from work earlier. Instead, I used acrylic and metallic markers. It's easier and faster to use.

I chose these colors for the base because they're pleasing to the eyes, and my mom loves them.

Then, I added some designs on its wings using a liquid eraser or correction pen. I first used some poster paint but resorted to the correction pen.

Using an orange gel pen, I also wrote my username, date, and signature. Can you see it? haha

Lastly, I took the masking tape around it and gave it to my mom. It may not look like a typical butterfly, but it's still beautiful.

I'd love to see something like this someday. Maybe it'll have some glitter around it when it flies. I'm glad that my mom liked it. She had already placed it on her wall.
