Angel Densetsu --- I Just Wanna Hug Kitano-kun!!!

A couple of weeks back, one of my students and I conversed about old manga about high school delinquents. I guess that was after I read Rookies which he was also familiar with. Then, he shared some of his favorites from that genre.

I finished reading one of his recommendations a few days ago, and I'd love to share it here with you. It's called Angel Densetsu.

NOTE: The photos are screenshots from the manga.

The story revolves around a transfer student named Seiichirou Kitano at Hekikuu High. He is often described as having a face that resembles a demon. His eyes are intimidating, featuring tiny irises, and he has nearly non-existent eyebrows. Overall, his appearance is tough and fearsome.

Despite his intimidating appearance, he is genuinely shy and kind-hearted. He often goes out of his way to help others, but his good intentions frequently lead to misunderstandings due to how he looks. His shyness complicates matters further, making it difficult for him to clarify these misunderstandings.

The manga focuses on Kitano's daily life at his new school, highlighting his struggles and joys of fitting in... and a whole lot of misunderstandings!

The manga is actually pretty good. It was published from 1992-2000. The art style may not be that attractive, but the story is worth reading.

Kitano is such a sweetheart despite his appearance. There were many times when I just wanted to step into the manga and protect him! haha I really disliked the discriminatory characters. It's sad because, unfortunately, such people exist in real life.

However, there are also a lot of likeable characters. One of my favorites is the guy above. He is called Takehisa and is Kitano's classmate. He's known to be a delinquent student and has misunderstood Kitano as a delinquent like him after witnessing Kitano's power (which was also kind of a misunderstanding).

There were many hilarious scenes, such as the fathers' battle, the theft at the Kitano household, and the funny and crazy encounters with their new neighbor.

And oh! The cute "rom-com" moments were also very entertaining to read.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading it. It was a roller coaster ride... I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and so on. If you want to feel the same, I recommend you read this as well. It only has around 80+ chapters, so finishing it won't take long.

Thanks for reading this post. I'll go ahead and end it here for now. See you around! (^^,)/

I find there's something fun about those older art styles. They're not always the most impressive, but they managed to feel unique, more closer to an artists own style rather than trying to appeal to loads of people through the art more than story.

I say this as someone that is incredibly picky when it comes to comics and will instantly drop something if the art doesn't appeal to me :^)

Sometimes when we're too picky, we miss out on something really good. But I know what you mean... When it's not visually appealing, we tend to lose motivation to read. Anyway, I'm glad I read this despite the art style. ✨😁

I had a situation recently where I read something that had an art style I absolutely could not enjoy, but the story was genuinely interesting and kept me reading to the end. That doesn't usually happen.

I do try to put the picky side of me behind though. Especially since I like art and I find that manga/comics offer a lot to learn through it.
