Thicker but not better

"Blood is thicker than water" is a popular statement used to express trust and belief in one's own immediate family especially in comparison with friends or acquaintances that are not related by blood. But is this saying really true?

While it may hold true in many instances where we see siblings looking out for each other and coming to the rescue in trust inspiring ways, this is not always the case as there are exceptions where it is even the people who have no blood ties that end up showing the greatest amount of love and loyalty.

Agreed, blood gives one the immediate trust and benefit of the doubt, but in life, many examples have made us realise that this is not always the case.
That does not automatically translate to trusting friends or acquaintances just because they are not blood.
Life calls for carefulness, trust is a very strong word and should be treated as such. It should not be used carelessly, else the repercussions may be grave.

Family being the first people we get close to just happen to be easily trusted when push comes to shove, when the stakes are high. But as humans, we have the ability to know if family can really be trusted. How have they behaved in some shaky moments, how loyal have they stayed?
Some friends also inspire confidence, even more than family.
So I believe, that out expectations from either family or friends should be individualized and not merely based on whether tied by blood or friendship.

If we personalise our relationships, we would be able to accord everyone their due place regardless of where they fit into the family tree.

Blood may be thicker than water but blood does not automatically supercede water. If not we should drink blood when we are thirsty.
