Mental health and physical health, which do you think is more important and should come first?
I am going to go on and say first that mental health and physical health are tightly entwined. No one is more important than the other, logically speaking.
It's like you can't have one without the other… but that is when some people are wrong. If there is one thing about human beings that I learn every day is that just as some are predictable, they are very unpredictable and complex.
They are both very important, but they can exist without each other, and this is something that happens every day. And it is one of the main reasons sayings like “don't judge a book by its cover" exist and make so much sense.
Some people would be truthful, and some lie about taking mental health and physical health the same. But the truth is that many people prioritize one over the other, and sometimes they don't even notice it.
Physical health has to do with the state of the body. While mental health is the state of the mind.
As for me, I am going to be sincere. I try my best to take both my mental health and physical health seriously, but I think even people around me who know me can easily testify that I hold my mental health higher than my the others.
I have always noticed that my mental state determines a lot in my life, from my choice- making, determination, lifestyle and my physical well-being.
I think it is well known that when the mind is tired, the body suffers.
Stuffs, Stress, anxiety, or overthinking affect your energy and productivity.
Without a healthy mind, even physical health goals fail.
Because it takes the mind to achieve a goal.
I understand the importance of balancing both, but I think mental health influences physical health more.
Someone who has health complications would always think and be worried. Thus affecting mental health.
Someone physically strong but depressed would always lack the energy to take care of themselves.
Or, when you feel stressed, your appetite, sleep, and even your immunity are affected.
And this is the reason people can easily tell I hold mental health higher, because the way I try my best to shield my mind from stress and anything I feel is unhealthy is very obvious.
One of my coursemates met me once and told me he liked my energy. He said he has been watching me, and I always try to stay away from anything negative that can drain my energy.
I set boundaries and avoid situations that drain my energy. He said that every time the class is panicking or even arguing about things that aren't serious he always sees me playing games, reading or sleeping. And it's true, lol.
I take breaks when I feel overwhelmed. I don't try to push myself too much.
I spend time with positive people and avoid toxic environments.
At the end of the day, I believe mental health comes first. But physical health is equally important and I can't fully care for my mind if I neglect my physical health. So no matter the one I value more, I make sure that none of them suffer.
