The Modern Dilemma: Doing What You Love vs. Doing What Pays

Our world is evolving by the day in all aspects of life, and while some of these evolutions are a blessing to the world, some seem to hold a questionable impact on it, and it's one of them I'll be talking about today. Which is how the world and human race have evolved from doing things or delving into a profession because of their love and passion for it to now going into the best-paying profession even if it's not something they're passionate about or making almost every sector a reward-minded one rather than the main purpose they were founded for in the first place.

Like I said, almost every sector has been infected with this money- or rewards-oriented syndrome, which includes schools, hospitals, and even our road network, amongst many others. Back in the day, the government built roads from taxpayers' money, and that was the end of it. Nowadays, the government would construct a road with taxpayers' money and still go ahead to construct a toll gate on the road so that motorists can be taxed to pay a certain fee for using the road? But is that ideal? To be truthful, I believe it's not, because at the end of the day, they only use those means to raise money and won't even maintain the road with the money they're collecting, and that's why you'll find bad roads everywhere and yet the government is collecting a toll fee.

The same is the case in schools and hospitals and other organizations; most are more reward-oriented than the actual purpose for which these institutions were founded. You can imagine how schools continually increase their fees and even go as far as introducing diverse ways to milk parents dry. When you go to the hospital, that's also the case; they even look for ways to collect money from people with health insurance. Take, for instance, thetimes when I visit the hospital and they'll tell me to go and pay before I can see the doctor. They'll say the same for medical tests and the same with getting medicine. Until I raise my voice to question the ridiculous billing, that's when they try to beg me to reduce my voice, which shows they're only doing it without the government backing.

Can this attitude ever stop, and will we get to a point where people will stop putting money first? If I'm being truthful, I'll say no, because the world economy, or better still, our country's economy, has been so bad that your salaries don't allow you to fend for your needs, and that's why many people look for different means to earn and end up turning these various institutions into a shadow of themselves. For instance, doctors now sell medication in their office, rather than write a prescription for you to get it at the pharmacy. The same is the case with teachers who now hold lessons and make students pay or sell textbooks just so they can make more money to cater for their bills.

If at all there will be changes, then first the government must rebuild our economy and make it better to the point where inflation becomes a thing of the past, then people's wages would be enough to cater for their needs and enough to invest in other things that better their lives. Without this happening, I doubt there'll be changes, and even if these happen, then we'll also have to start holding people accountable, arresting anyone who goes against the standard of the job ethics. That's the way we can grow and have a lasting change.

Exactly, we can't blame people, they just did things to sail through this tough time.

When bills keep coming up every day, who has the strength to be thinking of doing things for free in a nation like Nigeria, where the economy is going down every day.

People are now after money. Some people will read Mass Communication in school but because they heard that maybe doctors are collecting huge sum of money you will see them going to the hospital for work lying that they read about doctor or nurse in school all because of money. I can still remember during my Senior Secondary School days, our school will collect huge sum of amount for our school fees and instead of hiring teachers for each subjects, one teacher will be the one taking us two to three subjects all because of the money.

Money will always be a concern for people and it’s always what everyone seems to focus on, forgetting other things matter too.
