DIY Skills: Saving Money, Gaining Experience, and Becoming Independent

There are several things I can do all by myself without calling a professional, if it gets really complex, I only watch some videos on YouTube or TikTok for guidance, these things involve my regular chores like cooking, washing, organizing my space, sewing, I even fix extensions, clean a generator plug, a door handle, weave my hair on my own and many other things. Most of these skills I can outsource, but most times I really like trying to fix them, especially if I have watched someone fix it before, that makes it easier and also watch videos for guidance too.

But then there's one thing I can definitely do anytime and any day without outsourcing, and that's prepping my meals. Cooking is something I like doing, and that's because I don't like eating outside, cooking gives me that freedom to cook my preferred choice and that's why I can't outsource cooking. When I cook my meal, I can determine the quantity of seasonings that will be used, how I want the food to be prepared and determine the quantity. I really enjoy the satisfaction that comes with preparing meals and trying different recipes for myself , it improves my cooking skills and allows me to experiment.

Also, cleaning and arranging my space and environment is one chore I haven't outsourced before, professionals do good jobs, and maybe I haven't had major tasks that will need me to get their help, but so far I really enjoy the way I arrange my personal space, just the way I want and can do without outsourcing. I keep everything the way I want them to be and where I want them to be at without calling for support, it gives me a sense of responsibility.

Also, before I think of outsourcing some household chores, I also try to see if I can fix them myself and this is something that has worked for me several times, especially when I have the proper equipment to do them. I understand the importance of calling professionals, but most times I achieve this task perfectly without calling a professional, just like the door locker, it all started with fixing one at home, and now I can fix a locker to the door without outsourcing.

Also, fixing an extension head plug and even the fan head plug is something I can do without outsourcing. I watched a professional do this one, and then I started doing it, whenever I sense it's the reason an appliance isn't working. But when it gets really dangerous, calling a professional would definitely be an option to avoid damage and danger.

Also, I can weave my natural hair without outsourcing, but I outsource this because it's really stressful to achieve that, that's why I always go to the stylist, but in situations where I can't meet up with a stylist and need to weave down urgently, I do it on my own facing a mirror.

One of the opportunities that comes with being able to fix things on my own is the fact that I have to save money, that's because I'm not paying for the service. The money can be used for other expenses and I get my problems fixed on my own, that's a benefit of learning to fix things without outsourcing.

Apart from the financial benefits, it also helps me develop skills, survival skills and be able to do things. I have become more independent and self-reliant in performing things at home. We really can't tell when we need to implement a skill, and even when a professional won't be available, learning basic skills is really a good thing to do and will be useful in unexpected situations.

However, it's also not bad to outsource these jobs, time is really valuable and if you have the money to outsource, you go ahead, there's absolutely nothing wrong with outsourcing a job when necessary. Some jobs really require specialized knowledge, experience, and equipment. I also recognize when to do it myself and when to outsource a job.

In conclusion, I will continue doing certain things myself because and that's because I enjoy the process, I appreciate the sense of independence it gives to me, and definitely the financial benefits it comes with. Nevertheless, if I don't have the time to do all this on my own in the future, I will definitely outsource the jobs to professionals.
