Not Every Wall Is Your Canvas.

Free speech is important. I will say that at the beginning so no one misunderstands where I'm going, The ability to speak to create, to put something into the world without someone stopping it that matters, Art has always been one of the powerful ways people have shared things that words alone couldn't express and I respect that, I believe in that.

But there is a part of this discussion that people keep avoiding and its the part where we accept that not every place is the right place for every kind of expression.

A gallery is a choice, You step in knowing you might come across something difficult, something uncomfortable, something meant to make you think, You decided to go and you know whatever you find inside you chose to see it and if it upsets you, you leave, that's how it's supposed to work.

A public mural is different, a painting on the wall of a street that you pass every day, a market you go through, a road your kids walk to school daily, that one you didn't choose to see it, nah, It was placed in your way , if what is on that wall is something that you find deeply offensive, something that attacks your identity, that mocks people who look like you or that brings back memories that carry real history of pain, you don't get to avoid it, you just have to live with it and every single day for that matter

And that is where the free speech argument starts to get complicated, because free speech was never designed to mean consequence free speech in every location imaginable, It means you can express yourself, It does not mean the public is obligated to have your expression on their walls whether they like it or not.

Emotional harm is harm, this is the part people often ignore, the idea that something can hurt you without even leaving a physical mark, you can ask someone who has had to walk past images that dehumanize their community ,ask them what that does over time, ask what it feels like to explain to a child why something hateful has been painted large and bright on the street where they play, the argument that nobody is physically hurt completely sidesteps what actually happens to people psychologically when offensive content is made unavoidable in their daily lives, Discomfort is one thing. Imagery that targets and degrades a group of people is something different.

Now, who decides what counts as offensive that's the legitimate question, and it deserves a serious answer, Not everything that makes someone uncomfortable should be pulled down,
Art is supposed to challenge, The standard shouldn't be "this made me feel bad." It should be closer to does this demean a group of people, does it carry the kind of content that a reasonable person would find harmful, does it have any business being in a shared space that nobody opted into?

Public space is for everyone, because it is for everyone what goes into it should be held to a higher standard, than what you put up in your own studio.

Speak freely, but just remember that freedom of expression has never meant freedom from thinking about where and how you use it.
