Life without a Smartphone and Other Devices...

Smartphones have been an extension of the human body these days. It's challenging to find someone who doesn't have one. Whether it's a child or an elderly person, we can sometimes see them glued to this tiny yet powerful device.

I am obviously categorized as one of them. I use my smartphone in a lot of transactions these days, like purchasing something, paying the bills, and so on. For someone who finds it a hassle to go out, doing transactions on my phone is the best thing ever.

However, I don't think I'm that crazy about my phone. I don't use social media these days aside from HIVE, and I have actually uninstalled them (Facebook, IG, X, etc) from my phone.

I mainly use my phone for taking photos, playing games and reading manga. Well, I do chat with family and friends at times using some messenger apps, but not on a daily basis.

Now, the question is... How long can I go without a smartphone?

If I don't have any important transactions to make, I can live without it for a long time. I can use my time reading books or painting. Well, I use it to take photos of my art process, but let's say I have a camera, then I wouldn't have to use it at all.

If I had a bunch of actual comic books to read instead of using manga apps, I'd be more glued to the book than my phone. Well, it does happen when I read some novels.

Also, when my friends come over, I rarely use my phone... unless it's my male bestie and we play mobile games together. lol Otherwise, we'd just chat the whole day while munching on some snacks.

I remember that time around 10 years ago. I just started working from home, and my smartphone was broken. I didn't get a new one for around half a year or so. I work using my PC, so I didn't need it. However, one of my friends asked to meet up with me. Our only means of communication was through Facebook, and since I didn't have a phone, we did it the old way. We decided on a date and time, and just see how it goes.

Guess what? I survived! Luckily, she wasn't into "Filipino time" (the type of person who's an hour late). She arrived on time, though we had to wait for our other friends after that. At least, I had her contact them.

Another experience was when a typhoon hit our area in December 2021. We didn't have electricity or internet for weeks.

What I did that time (aside from helping out at home) was read books, play board games with my mom, do art classes for the kids in our community, and draw a bunch of stuff. At night, my parents and I stayed outside, talked and played games and enjoyed the starry sky.

So yeah, it's possible for me to survive without my phone... although it could be quite inconvenient.

What about without a PC?

Well, that's a different story! It's my bread and butter, so it would be difficult to survive without it. I work every day using my PC, so it would be impossible to live without it. I also watch anime and make HIVE content using it. I love it more than my smartphone! hahaha

However, if I took a vacation, then I could survive without my PC. :)

In the end, people's reliance on these devices can be quite concerning, especially when they only use them for pleasure. Needs are different from wants.

However, if it's for important things like work-related things, then it's totally understandable.

They're good tools... pretty convenient. However, they're not everything. There's more to this world and this life than gadgets.

Thanks for reading, and see you around! (^^,)/

Yes, nowadays if we are not smart in dividing our time, we probably won't be able to get away from our cell phones.

True... discipline is important. :)
People tend to lose track of time when they're using their smartphones... XD

I think I love your intro for real because phones have gone beyond just devices but rather extension of human beings, lol
It's almost always impossible for us to detach ourselves I guess but well, just like you said that you can manage when you go for a vacation, I think some life occurrences might also be able to detach us, heheh but making use of the devices to the best will also be a better alternative

Nice read

That's how I imagine smartphones these days. It's like an additional part of people's bodies.
Yes, when we busy ourselves with other things, it's actually possible to detach ourselves from our phones.
Phones aren't bad, it's people's dependence and addiction to them that's not good.

Thank you! :)

It seems like you use it more as a tool, since you've removed one of the biggest problems that social networks can have. Also love my PC way more than the cellphone anime, manga stuff :)

Loved this details:

  • Filipino time hour late.
  • Dr Stone and Chopper

Yes... Aside from manga and gaming, my phone is for important stuff.
And PC is better for anime watching. hahaha

Yes... Filipino time is one of the negative cultures that a lot of Filipinos still practice. It's annoying. XD
Chopper and Senku.. <3 They're always with me.

I'll try using more of my phone for manga. I'm currently using a vertical monitor for that, but the phone is faster and easier...

Haha. I know what you mean about the PC being more useful than smartphone on occasion especially when it comes to posting on HIVE. But....That's what laptops are for. Can go with you and still have a battery when the power is down :)

I have a laptop, but it's old and slow... I just upgraded my PC last year, so I love it. Haha I also feel more comfortable using it, especially for my classes. :) So even if I have a laptop, I'd still go for my PC. ^^
