Home or Here: A Holiday Question
It is that time of the year when we try to get even merrier and nicer. Christmas is coming, but unlike the past few years, I am nowhere near home this time. I am about a 16-hour drive away from home, and I am perplexed about whether I'd even travel at all. Funding is the major constraint.
I would like to travel, of course. The Christmas season isn't just about Christmas alone for me. My mother's birthday is on Christmas Day. It gives me more reason to be at home and celebrate with her and my family. It has always been a joyful season for us all, so I look forward to it as usual.
At this time, however, I have a truckload of work to attend to before I can actually leave for anywhere. I really do not like the job, so I am very unenthusiastic about the entire stress that would come with it. You really would expect such when there's no form of incentivization that measures up to the task.
I could stay here for the holidays and explore what it's like here around this time and experience it all since I may not be in this part of the country for a very long time. I would only have to travel to a part of this state where things could really happen. Nothing much really happens here. And I was reminded of it over the weekend.
I travelled to a nearby state for some work-related things, and I was away for three days. It was then that I realised that I really needed to leave the cubicle where I reside, explore places, and live life a little more regularly. I returned home and felt, you know, "back to square one again."
From a time when I spent $40 To fix a $66 cake
So, if I do not get to travel home, I would have to hit up a couple of friends that stay on the busier side of the state and move there for the holidays. I would like to travel back home, however. I haven't seen my family in such a long time, and we have missed ourselves. And there are activities and festivals that I am accustomed to at home that I would really miss.
From what it looks like right now, I may only get to stay for about three weeks. Then I'd have to return to where I am at the moment and this job that I really do not find any joy in.
Keresimesi is a Christmas event hosted by the church I used to attend while I was a student at the university. Keresimesi literally means "Christmas" in Yoruba. I have been attending it for a long time. As a matter of fact, I performed with the choir as a guitarist in the last one, which was last year.
I would like to visit again and experience it again, although I would only be a part of the audience this time as I wasn't a part of their rehearsals and planning all along. I did document the last experience—the one with @starstrings01. If you'd like to indulge yourself, find it here.
We usually host people around this time of the year—family and friends—as it's my mother's birthday, so people often travel in to be with her and celebrate her. The house gets fuller, merrier, and busier. I look forward to that. You know, meeting cousins again after a long time and having fun with them
I would like to see a couple of friends around this time. I would be away for yet another six months, at least after this season, and I haven't even seen some of them in such a long time. Hopefully, I will get to hang with them and see that they are doing very well with my own eyes. Something like this one with @teminike
What we know as Christmas over here isn't snow, bells, gift boxes under a Christmas tree with decor and lights around it, and things of that sort. What we know here are plenty of foods to eat—particularly chicken—lots and lots of drinks to eat, sounds of music all around, fireworks sometimes, and a lot of electricity from the grid—if they are so kind this time. I look forward to all that, as that's how we roll where I am from.
What makes Christmas truly Christmas is about people, food and drinks, and jollyment. That's what I look forward to experiencing this year again, regardless of where I may be.

If you can get past the constraint that is finance and you can manage to spend that long on the road, I think you should go home.
It's evident you miss home and those few days(three weeks isn't so small if you ask me) would do you some good. Celebrating the season at a different place might be a little adventure maybe but it'll feel different. Never same as when you're with family.
Your mum will be excited to have you with her on her birthday. Double celebration for you all.
Just go home if you can, that may just be all the detox and refill you'll need to get you better energized to continue at the joyless job. Who knows?

You are on a journey to life discovery or should I call it an a compulsory adventure. The distance is much, although if money is not a barrier, you could just travel and be with your family since you guys have missed yourselves....I can imagine the merriment, the food, the music 🎵🎶 and all of that

Don't worry dear, you only need to plan and pray so that you can be with your family during the festive season but if by chance you did not travel, you can always call them and use every minute to be happy🥰❤️

True. I can compensate for being far away from my family during the holidays by being around virtually, by calling them and all. But I'd like to be with them, so I'll make arrangements.

That job which you don't derive joy from...is it crucial that you do it? I know how doubly the stress is when one works at a place where there is no joy or passion.

You know it's where I was posted to for service. I really cannot say that I wouldn't do the job. My problem is that I really do not have passion for it and yet I don't get paid at all for it. But there's only six months left anyway.

It's necessary to be part of the family celebration despite the 16hrs drive. The impact of you going home will supercede the stress experience on road. Perhaps, I can attest to how bad the road in Nigeria is.
Do well to go share the love with mum and family.
It is necessary to be part of the family during this time of the year. After all, I wasn't with them for most of the year.
The road's terrible, that's for sure, but there's nothing to do about it anyway.

Yeahhh! My family is yearning to see me. If I don't show up it wouldn't be nice, luckily for me it is not that far from home compared to yours. It's just a seven hours drive but my kind of person doesn't really like sitting for long so I see the distance extremely far.
But I wouldn't disappointed though.

Bro Christmas is your mum's birthday. You really need to go back home. I would have loved to be present but would be very difficult because of family. I am quite used to spending it with family even though I don't really have anything much doing that time.
