Before I left on Sunday morning, we all bid ourselves farewell with hugs and hand waves but just a few steps to my vehicle, I saw tears running down the cheek of my lovely daughter, Ada. She made me feel so emotional that I could not turn on the ignition of the car. I stood by the car door, waiting for her to be calm before driving off.
Ada is my first child and daughter. She is the joy of my fatherhood. As a first time father, she brought with her the very essence of being married and to be called a man.
When she turned one year old, we celebrated her birthday in my parents house where my father, her grandfather who was done by her as his first grandchild, made the birthday so colourful even beyond our plans as I remembered how she sat calmly on my father's thigh and took several photoshoots.
A week after her birthday, she became sick. At first, we thought it was the normal children's fever that we got the popular babyrex medication for her but the high temperature persisted. Due to my experience, I requested that we visit the hospital which turned out that she was suffering from Vitamin A deficiency. Thankfully, we got the right medication and she became well. We were however warned that she is a gifted child and that she must be given a quality education.
It was because of this that I decided to put her in the school where I used to work as a teacher but was promoted to become the principal for eight years before I advanced for greener pastures.
Today, my daughter is challenging me to change her school because she is not challenged by the activities in the school. I wondered how much the school has changed in status and bounds since I left. This has become a worrisome issue for me and my wife since she started complaining about a year ago.
Ada is currently in her basic nine (9) class and she is only eleven years old. I ensured that she wasn't just making this up. I visited the school with my wife to find out what is really the issue. I discovered that one of the quality teachers have left due to personal reasons and some gifted students have also moved.
Now, what bothers me is that I enjoy some certain privileges in school fees payment since I was a pioneer staff of the school having worked there for over two decades. The financial involvement of taking my daughter to another school with quality teachers and facilities is very high and not something I can afford right now and my daughter has discovered that she needs an improved school.
While I am here in the international conference which is tagged Anti-Fragility: Building A Sustainable Workforce In A Changing WorldI learned here that we have to take responsibility. The education of my daughter is my responsibility and I intend to give my best. As soon as I am done with this conference, I will make sure to swipe to action to get her a better school and work smarter to pay her through the remaining three years of secondary education. So, help me God.
