There’s something strange in the air. It feels like everyone senses that a larger-scale war is about to happen. It’s not just a vague feeling that something might occur, it feels imminent. News about wars is becoming more and more common, attacks, people dying, places in ruins. For some, it already feels close, for others it’s still just news, but it’s hard to deny the fear that war could reach us. And if that happens, what should we do?

Inevitably, if a war reaches Brazil, I will have to report for duty, since I am within the conscription age and, until recently, I was a reservist. I left as a corporal in the Brazilian Army, but even so, I would still be recruited. If there is any possibility of not going, I will take it, but if there is no other choice, I will have to fulfill my duty, even if I don’t agree with it.

If not being drafted is an option, I already have an escape or survival plan in mind, and even if I am called up, I will try to ensure my family’s safety first. The first step would be to leave the urban area where I currently live and head inland, more precisely to my hometown, where I know everything around me and where to find resources and shelter if needed. So if I do have to serve my country as a soldier, I already have a plan, and that plan is to protect my family and get them to a safe place.

To be honest, I already have some equipment ready in case things get out of control, such as an emergency backpack prepared for a quick departure. I have enough resources in that backpack to survive for three days, but I’m thinking about improving it for a longer period, or even adding more suitable tools to live independently for longer. It will also depend on the location, and if I manage to reach the place I have in mind, things will be much easier, since I know the local fauna and flora and could survive there for quite some time with the resources available.

I believe I’ve had a survivalist mindset for quite some time, and if a war or any other chaotic event happens, I think I’m well prepared to face it. I know what steps to take, what to do, what to think, and what to bring with me. I can say that yes, I would be prepared to leave and wait for things to become less chaotic. Of course, if it lasts for a long time, it won’t be easy, and even for prepared people, it’s still very difficult. With family, things would be even more complicated. But it’s still better than facing the consequences of an urban environment with uncontrolled people and having no preparation at all. Just imagine the chaos not only a war can cause, but also how people behave when order collapses in a chaotic scenario. It won’t be anything pleasant to witness.

Maybe it’s already too late, but my intention has always been, even before all these war rumors, to buy a house in the countryside and become self-sufficient, generating my own energy, growing my own food, raising animals, and having an independent source of clean water. Unfortunately, I still don’t have the financial resources to buy a place like that. Beyond a dream, it’s a goal, and I hope nothing happens before I can achieve it, because if I did, it would truly be the perfect place to take refuge, with resources not only to support my family, but also to help others.

But if I really don’t need to be recruited by the Armed Forces, or if there is any way to avoid actively participating in this war that seems to be approaching, I have a plan. It may not be perfect, but I know what to do and where to go in a moment when many people would freeze in the face of something as terrible as war. There’s a common saying in the survivalist community, “It’s better to be prepared and never need it than to need it and not be prepared.” I carry that with me, and I know that if the time comes, I will be ready, and my family will have better chances in the face of war or any chaotic scenario.

Tem algo estranho no ar. Parece que todos estão sentindo que, de fato, uma guerra de proporções maiores está prestes a acontecer. Não é apenas uma sensação de que algo vai acontecer, parece iminente. Se não ser convocado for uma opção, um plano de fuga ou de sobrevivência já foi pensado por mim e mesmo que eu seja, tentarei colocar minha família em segurança. A primeira atitude seria sair da zona urbana onde vivo atualmente e ir em direção ao interior, mais precisamente para minha terra natal, onde conheço tudo ao redor e sei onde conseguir recursos e refúgio, se necessário. Então, de fato, se eu tiver que servir ao meu país como soldado, antes eu tenho um plano, e esse plano consiste em proteger minha família e ir para um local seguro.

Para ser sincero, eu possuo alguns equipamentos prontos para caso as coisas saiam do controle, como por exemplo uma mochila de emergência preparada para sair às pressas. Tenho recursos necessários nessa mochila para sobreviver por três dias, mas estou pensando em melhorar isso para um período maior, ou mesmo incluir ferramentas mais apropriadas para viver por mais tempo de forma independente. Tudo vai depender também do local, e, se de fato eu conseguir chegar ao lugar que tenho em mente, as coisas serão bem mais fáceis, pois conheço a fauna e a flora local e conseguiria sobreviver ali por um bom tempo com os recurso que existem por lá.

Acho que já possuo um espírito sobrevivencialista a algum tempo, e, caso uma guerra ou qualquer outro evento que proporcione caos aconteça, acredito estar bem preparado para enfrentá-lo. Sei quais passos devo tomar, o que fazer, o que pensar e o que devo levar comigo. Posso dizer que sim, estaria preparado para fugir e esperar as coisas ficarem menos caóticas. Claro que, se isso durar muito tempo, não é um desafio fácil, e, mesmo para pessoas preparadas, ainda assim é algo muito difícil. Com familiares, as coisas seriam ainda mais complicadas. Mas é melhor dessa forma do que enfrentar as consequências do meio urbano com pessoas descontroladas e não ter preparação alguma para enfrentar isso. Imagine só o caos que não apenas uma guerra pode proporcionar, mas também como as pessoas vão se comportar quando a ordem for derrubada por um cenário caótico. Não vai ser nada bonito de se ver.

Talvez seja tarde demais, mas a minha intenção sempre foi, antes mesmo dos rumores de guerra, comprar uma casa no campo e ser autossustentável: gerar minha própria energia, ter minha própria plantação e criação de animais, e contar com uma fonte de água potável independente. Infelizmente, ainda não tenho recursos financeiros suficientes para comprar um lugar com essas características. Além de um sonho, isso é um objetivo, e espero que nada aconteça até que eu consiga realizá-lo, pois, se conseguisse, seria de fato o local perfeito para se refugiar, com recursos e até mesmo poder ajudar não só minha família, mas também outras pessoas.

Mas, se eu realmente não precisar ser recrutado pelas Forças Armadas, ou houver algum jeito de não participar ativamente dessa guerra que aparentemente parece estar por vir, eu tenho um plano. Talvez não seja perfeito, mas eu sei o que fazer e para onde ir em um momento em que muitas pessoas congelariam diante de algo tão terrível quanto a guerra. Existe uma frase muito comum no meio sobrevivencialista: “É melhor estar preparado e nunca precisar do que precisar e não estar preparado.” Então levo essa frase comigo e sei que, se precisar, estarei preparado e minha família terá melhores chances diante de uma guerra ou um cenário caótico.
