I have been listening to some conspiracy theories, one of my favorite pastimes while I am at the gym. Many of them involve genetic modifications among circles of extremely wealthy people and things like that. Until now, they were just theories, things we hear about and all that. But if we analyze it carefully, is it not already possible to order children according to our preferences? I honestly do not doubt that this possibility already exists or is far from becoming reality. It seems that chance and nature itself are no longer the only things setting the rules, especially for the powerful. Being able to choose what your heir will be like would be much more convenient, would it not?

This kind of thing would not even be unprecedented. For many years, we have been making selections in agriculture, choosing the best fruits, seeds, and other elements. If we look at some cultures from the past, children with physical conditions or those who did not fit the expected standard were, in some ways, treated as sacrifices or even killed. Was that not a form of direct selection?

Of course, we are talking about genetic modifications here, and perhaps that really does sound strange. We are still not entirely accustomed to this possibility, but I do not doubt that, in a few years, people may be able to choose what they want their children to be like. They may be able to choose their sex, height, eye color, and many other characteristics. Personally, I find this very strange, but does this perspective exist only because we are not yet accustomed to these possibilities? Could I change my mind in a few years? Could this way of thinking be similar to that of the people who sacrificed their unwanted children?

I do not know, but it is very difficult to accept that genetic nature, something that has been so important throughout the years, may be losing its importance. I think there are things that should not be modified. If this becomes something common, even the way things will be in the future could become quite strange. Think about how attached we are to certain standards of beauty, in which many people value specific characteristics. Would diversity disappear and, after a few generations, would everyone become almost the same? Would it really be such an exaggeration to imagine that?

There are things that should truly remain the way they are. It is understandable for one thing or another to be modified in order to prevent certain diseases or difficulties that could make someone dependent on others or prevent them from having a dignified life. But modifying people in pursuit of beauty or for such superficial reasons begins to border on insanity, and I truly hope the world does not move in that direction. Perhaps this is simply the opinion of a guy who is living in the past and, in a few years, people will read this and laugh. Yes, maybe. But from where I stand, all of this seems, at the very least, insane.

Será que, daqui a alguns anos, eu poderia mudar de ideia? Será que essa não é uma maneira de pensar assim como os povos que sacrificavam seus filhos "indesejados"?

Não sei, mas é bem difícil aceitar que a natureza genética, algo que foi tão importante ao longo dos anos, possa estar perdendo sua importância. Acho que existem coisas que não deveriam ser modificadas. Se isso se tornar algo comum, até mesmo a forma como as coisas serão no futuro poderia ser bastante estranha. Pense em como somos adeptos de um determinado padrão de beleza, no qual muitas pessoas se apegam às certas características. A diversidade acabaria e, depois de algumas gerações, todos seriam quase iguais? Não seria muito exagerado imaginar isso, seria?

Existem coisas que realmente deveriam continuar do jeito que são. Tudo bem que uma coisa ou outra seja modificada para evitar algumas doenças ou dificuldades que possam tornar uma pessoa dependente ou impedir que ela tenha uma vida digna.
