Perhaps many of us thought about becoming superheroes when we were children. Our imagination was simple and pure, just fighting the bad guys to make the world a better place. After a while, we only think about eliminating the biggest villain in adult life: bills. No fighting crime or improving the world, we just want to live better. We no longer have time for these fantasies, or we even come to the stark reality that the world is just the way it is.

But let's suppose that our adult villain is no longer a problem. Now we have enough money to build a batcave, buy a batmobile, and we have several crime-fighting tools purchased on Shopee or Amazon. Could we become a kind of vigilante and fight crime, even if only in our neighborhood?

I think there are people who would do that, but not me. It's not that I trust the authorities blindly, but in my state, in my city, security is good. But even if I lived in a place where crime was more prevalent, I would never attempt the folly of becoming a vigilante. What would I do? Well, I would just move to a quieter place, to the countryside, which is where I want to return one day and perhaps build a self-sustainable place, with crops, animals, my own energy, and drinking water. If I had enough money, well, I would just take care of my own life and the lives of those I love.

I know this sounds selfish in a way, but if even the police, an institution that has been around for so long, can't fight crime definitively, what would I be doing in my neighborhood, wearing swim trunks over my pants, trying to find thieves and criminals? The most I could achieve would be some trouble with the law. Yes, if my work as a vigilante were effective, I would certainly get into trouble with the law. So what would be the advantage of doing that? I prefer to take care of my own life.

I know that some people may want to become vigilantes or take justice into their own hands because they can no longer stand the incompetence of the police or the justice system in their country. I know it's upsetting to see people doing whatever they want and getting away with it. I feel that helplessness, I think we all do. But, in a very remote scenario, hypothetically, I wouldn't try to wipe out neighborhood thugs, drug dealers, and the like, but rather corrupt politicians—that would be much more fun.

Well, unfortunately, I still have to deal with my own personal villains, the bills that keep coming in, so let's deal with them one at a time, and maybe one day I'll be victorious in this battle. But anyway, I think that if the problem is where we are, trying to change places is more feasible than trying to change the place. That's how things work: being a vigilante won't change much, unless you want to find some more problems in your life.
