Envying What People Are Only Pretending to Have

The world have always been full of the fakes and the original or genuine, it's how the world finds balance. We wouldn't know what's true if we didn't know what a lie is, we won't know what is genuine if we don't know what a fake is. Fakes have been in existence long before bots and social media, only few have tried to be more real.

It took me a while to be aware that people are faking likes, followers and streams. I didn't know better before and I would just quietly wish I could have what they have, unknown to me that I was wishing for what they didn't have but faking to have. There's so much fake out there honestly.

It takes wisdom, contentment and saying no to comparison to overlook the fakes out there. People who live the fake lives online were once those who didn't have the wisdom to look past others' lives but wanted such lives for themselves. Until they get the real life, they decide to fake it and it becomes a part of them.

In my different phases of life, I've seen people who lived fake lives in different ways. Even I have lived the fake life out of fear of being left out or to belong. Fake life is not just the grand stage of having fake likes, followers or aesthetic videos for views, it's also saying yes to what you'd say no to and buying an item because another has it.

Of course, living a fake life is hurting people but I'll say it here that the people who are hurt by it are those who concern themselves deeply about what others are doing. It's okay to be concerned about people but trying to copy everything they do, that's where it all goes wrong because you may be blinded to the fact that it might be fake.

So even though the fakes in the world today is bound to hurt people, it can also be the opposite if people would bother to think more about themselves and how to better their lives than actually trying to copy whatever they see without making good decisions. I think it's okay to copy but it should never be out of no self respect.

And no, I don't see any need for fake acts to be criminalized. I mean, it does sound like a good idea but let's remember that even the criminalized acts now are still being carried out and people are still getting hurt by them. I don't see someone trying to fake it till they make it to be a crime, instead let's love ourselves more.

Let's be wise in our judgement of what we see on the internet today, knowing that almost everything is not as they seem. There is always more than is shown on screen, think more on what that could be and appreciate yourself more for being real. Because if it becomes a crime, people will still fake their lives, so let's be wise.

Had this debate with a mate at work a while ago. He'd been to the beach with the wife and kid, they had all these lovely photos plastered over Facebook. One caught my eye a photo taken from a hole in the sand using mobly, so all three of them appeared to be peering in and smiling, it framed the day out sublimely.

So I asked him, amazing pictures must have been some day. He replied, "the missus wanted that pic all day and wore me down until I gave in and started digging.. It started raining so we sat in the car for a bit, then jumped out and ran and took the photo in between showers" - I mean after hearing that the magic was lost somewhat lol.

@merit.ahama What a powerful and timely post. You nailed it—social media has made it so simple to put together a curated, superficial version of reality and pass it off as truth. It requires a great deal of self-awareness and contentment to step back and realize that we are often comparing our real lives to someone else's heavily engineered highlight reel (or outright fakes such as bought engagement and bot streams).

Your point about knowing what a lie or fake is to really know what is real really resonates. It reminds us to stop looking to others and to start building real value right where we are. Thank you for this wisdom and reminder to choose contentment over comparison!
