The Illusion Filters Create in Reality
The truth remains that photo filters have become a dominant part of our social lives. Filters enhance the appearance and add a creative touch to our pictures, giving them a higher level of beauty. Answering the question, if I apply filters to make myself look better, the answer would be yes, but not all the time.
Adding filters makes ordinary pictures look captivating. Apart from that, filters are used to refine pictures by balancing, correcting, and adding different visual arts to the image while maintaining identity. The truth remains that these filters can be very deceptive as they make one look flawless, hiding all the imperfections and presenting one's ideal self.
Myself
Personally, I don't see any wrong in using filters. Since the main reason we take pictures is not dependent on the tools we use, but on our ability to capture quality images and convey meaning, using filters in a mindful way does no harm to the images. Being moderate in our application of filters would help maintain transparency and originality. While we are trying to be creative, we should not be excessive in applying filters in order not to set unrealistic expectations.
Many people in the social media landscape are fond of applying filters to pictures in order to meet the societal standard of beauty.
The majority of the friends I have are people I met online. There is this particular friend named Favor. We used to work for an online company before I stopped due to personal reasons. What made our friendship work were our shared values and interests. No day passed without her making a video of herself promoting the company's services.
In the videos, she always appeared flawless and there was no evidence that she was using a photo filter. One day, I couldn't help but appreciate her picture, and I was equally tempted to ask her about the phone brand she uses, expecting to hear iPhone, but it wasn't. She told me it's Redmi, and I assumed maybe that's why her pictures are so sharp and flawless, along with the videos she posts. The company celebrated its one-year anniversary, and there was an in-person gathering at the head office. I was excited as we would finally have the opportunity to meet each other face to face.
We were all told to arrive a day before the big day, as the manager had booked a hotel for all of us. One by one, the hotel was getting filled. However, when Favour arrived, I don't know if others felt what I felt, but I was taken aback. I couldn't hide my shock, but I allowed her to finish all the introductions just like we did. "WOW, finally, I have met my online princess, but this face looks so different from what Redmi has been showing me. Regardless, we are all beautiful."
The truth was that reality was so different from the illusion. The flawless face in her pictures was not the same as the dark complexioned girl I had seen in person. It sent a wave of disappointment over me. One good thing about Favor is that she possesses inner beauty and doesn't really look that ugly, but her excessive use of filters in all her pictures conveyed a deceptive message about her true appearance.
After my encounter with Favor, I became very mindful of how I use filters. Whenever I'm using any filter-enhancing tool, I make sure the one I'm using is simple and doesn't set unrealistic expectations.
This your unfiltered seems more beautiful 😍 even though both are equally a top-notch 🤗
You are now making me blush. Thanks so much ife mi. Lol, I don't know if that is correct. But I was told Ife means love in Yoruba last week.
Yes o My love, you're very correct 🤗🫂🤗😍😘🫂🤗
See me blushing sheepishly.
Yes darling, you're actually a sweet soul 😘
Awwn. Thanks for the compliment.
This is the main reason why I never judge anybody by their pictures on social media, they always look different in real life when compared to their online pictures
You are totally right. I remember when I uploaded that picture I wore red on my WhatsApp status. Many of my friends who have not seen me for years became thinking I have left the country because of the transformation.
Some people go overboard to deceive others with reckless editing of their pictures. Yours above is moderate and lovely.
Thank you so much dear @lightpen. I appreciate you a lot.
You are welcome.
Hahaha..I feel Ur little disssapointment on your online friend when you finally met her physically. Moderation is the key. I don't even use filter anyway but I wouldn't condemn it
I mean, it was so unexpected. Expecting to see the all beautiful Favour as her Redmi presented her left me with revised version. Hahaha. Not being excessive in whatever we do is the key to perfection.
Your kind comment on my post is much appreciated, gracias love @nkemakonam89 .
My dear, you made a profound statement that really deepened my understanding. Filters presents an imperfect person as someone without spot or wrinkles hmmm it kept me wondering most at times. That's why I never draw conclusions with the pictures I see alone.
I equally don't draw conclusions too until I see the person face to face. After my experience with Fav, I learnt how to ignore so many distractions.
Ok nah
There are many differences between the filter image and the original image. He makes you look great by hiding a lot of things that the original doesn't
That's a fact I can't dispute. The both have their distinctive difference.
yes right bought are different
That was the second favor you met lol
Yea that is one disadvantage of filter, the moment you get used to it, you don't want to stop and it may ruin something beautiful you are building online when you eventually get to meet the person and they feel disappointed because you are not who you are online
Exactly. Imagine a person selling a beauty products online using filters for her daily promotion and she is winning customers heart only for one to see her one day looking completely out of what she had thought of her to look like.
Filter does have huge disadvantages but fun when its used when taking personal pictures, the types that could be classified under camera roll pictures. No leave, no transfer. Hahaha.
Those who bought the beauty product need to sue her😂
Hahaha
Yay! 🤗

What a pleasant surprise. Thanks so much Ife mi, this came so unexpected. I'm super grateful for your support and generosity.
Using filter gives us the flawless image of ourselves which we want people to see. I understand how disappointed you were as regards your friend, is more like the person behind the lens versus the person standing right Infront of you.
That's exactly what I got. I was so disappointed because it was the least of my expectation.
Yes, I understand you perfectly. So... now you wouldn't believe all that you see online.
Nothing is really wrong with making use of filters but I think too much of it could pass a wrong message.
Exactly. That's a fact to be noted by many that are misusing filters.
You look beautiful in both image like seriously because the filter makes the picture more colorful that's all
Awwwwn. Now I'm left with nothing to say first but to blush. Thank you so much my Princess for the warm compliment.
I can imagine your facial expression when you saw her 🤣, truly just like you said, applying filters to pictures in order to meet the societal standard of beauty .I use filters but not too much so i dont create a deceptive look in the real world. Thanks for sharing
My sister, I was taken aback. I mean her own was very extreme. Imagine seeing a fair person without blemishes everyday on your phone screen only to meet her in person to see complexion that is not even close to what you have been seeing on phone screen. It's was a disappointment really.
