Addiction is a very deep topic, a very deep one, also it is one a lot of people feel they can talk about freely as if they are as well not guilty of it in one way or the other. A person can be addicted to anything, might be your phone, an artist, a music... Anything.

Also, most of the things we often see and count as big and see as addiction most times are the likes of porn, betting, gambling, masturbation and the likes, and then you find someone who's addicted to his phone and scrolling on the internet advising someone else who's addicted to masturbating. They say things like, "you can stop if you really want to stop, just make the decision and stay glued to it." If it is that easy, what haven't you loosened your grip on your phone too.
That was me some time ago too, but then I've seen things now and I know it is never as simple as it sounds. All of this things starts with ones choice, but it doesn't remain one. What I'm saying is, you have control over it at first, but before you know it, it is the one controlling you, and at the end of the day you find out that you can't do or go through a day without engaging in it.

Also, I don't believe that people remain addicted to whatever just because they can't keep to their own promise of stopping. Addiction like I said earlier is not small, it is not even a small topic to be discussed in few words. Addiction is big, it is wide, of it was easy to stop a lot of people who are addicted to drinking would have stopped the first time it embarrassed them publicly, it is not easy to stop that is why you will still see them at a beer parlor tomorrow getting drunk. I'm not saying they are weak, nah, I'm saying what they are fighting is stronger then their willpower.
But then, when a person decides from within them to change, we can't still leave them on their own. Agree that they feel bad or remorseful, agreed that they really want to stop, even still you can't leave them be, if you do, you will be surprised at what you will find them doing again in a few days. What I'm saying is, such people still need help, they need support, they need counseling, they need treatments, and they as well need those who will keep encouraging them till they are able to stand firm again.

It is not easy to quit an addiction totally, it is easier to get into it than it is to get out of it. There are some who have successfully pulled themselves out, but they will tell you it is not easy, a lot of trial and error, there are those who as well get support to get out of it, they will as well tell you how uneasy it was to let go.
So, addiction can be a choice at the beginning, then we don't see it as an addiction yet, we feel we have control over it and can stop when we want to, but later it gets the control over us and then you find out it is no longer a choice. So, instead of judging people and shouting at them or asking if they will ever stop or change, we should ask how we can be of help to them.
